Future Starts Slow Lyrics
You can holler, you can wail
You can swing, you can flail
You can fuck like a broken sail
But I'll never give you up
If I ever give you up my heart will surely fail
And after all God can keep my soul
England have my bones
But don't ever give me up
I could never get back up when the future starts so slow
No longing for the moonlight
No longing for the sun
No longer will I curse the bad I've done
If there's a time when your feelings gone, I wanna feel it
You can holler, you can wail
You can blow what's left of my right mind
You can swing, you can flail
You can blow what's left of my right mind
(I don't mind)
There's a time for the second best
And there's a time when the feeling's gone
But it's hard to be hard I guess
When you're shaking like a dog
You can holler, you can wail
You can blow what's left of my right mind
You can swing, you can flail
You can blow what's left of my right mind
You can holler, you can wail
You can blow what's left of my right mind
You can swing, you can flail
You can blow what's left of my right mind

The song is about two people who can't be together, for any number of reasons. Maybe someday in the future, they can be, but it won't be for a while.
So the singer tells the lover, "it's okay, I'll let you go for now. date whoever you want, fuck whomever you want, but in the end, don't forget about me." The singer does the same, and the "shaking like a dog" line is a reference to empty, passionless sex.
The singer accepts this because the want for the other person hurts so much that he/she would rather put those feelings aside for the time being.
___"If there's a time when your feelings gone, I wanna feel it"
___"There's a time for the second best"
Love this. There's references to sex but to me it's generally saying "you can drive me crazy, get angry, but I'm never leaving you and I hope you don't leave me"
oh, and that guitar riff <3

Just one really really well thought out track about what love actually is like. Completely unconditional. The whole idea of "what's left of my right mind" just really gets to me, it's like as if they're trying to communicate that this song is written by someone who's not only figured out what they feel but exactly how the world would perceive them, and accepts that, and still goes ahead and sings it. You would think that that's an after thought but it's actually a follow up to the "future starts slow" line, the fact that yes, they know time destroys and heals all things, but they would rather go through the hell of being with their lover than retreat into meaningless expectation. There's much more to say about this song, but I think the surmise might be that it's the most self-less meditation on love. Fuck I love this song.
It is talking about trying for something or someone and failing. But it is telling you who fail do not give up "There's a time for the second best". Then it tells you you may hurt from failing but "And there's a time when the feeling's gone" even though your scared you got to be tough "But it's hard to be hard I guess When you're shaking like a dog" dont throw tantrums like a little girl "You can holler, you can wail You can blow what's left of my right mind You can swing, you can flail" and i say girl be cause girls use the right side of the brain "You can blow what's left of my right mind" where as men use the left
"And after all God can keep my soul England have my bones But don't ever give me up I could never get back up when the future starts so slow
No longing for the moonlight No longing for the sun No longer will I curse the bad I've done If there's a time when your feelings gone, I wanna feel it"
this part leads me to believe that it is a about a person because asks someone to not give them up and if they were dropped or fallen they probably would fall behind or even die/kill themselves but the person becomes strong and realizes there will be a time when that horrible feeling inside of failing will be gone one day and that they will make it.
that is my perspective of the song
For me this song is about leaving someone or something behind. You know you can't move on if you wouldn't /couldn't let somebody behind. (,,Future starts slow.")
,,You can holler, you can wail You can swing, you can flail You can fuck like a broken sail But I'll never give you up If I ever give you up my heart will surely fail "
It doesn't matter, what he/she does, you just don't want to let go because it will break your heart.
If there's a time when your feelings gone, I wanna feel it
This is my fav line,it says everything. You rather wait for the other to leave you than do something before it's too late. You rather feel the pain.
But it's hard to be hard I guess When you're shaking like a dog
After a breakup you want to keep your pride and be strong, but it's hard when you're shaking and you're in pain.

No use sugar coating things; The lines mean: It's difficult to maintain an erection when you're fucking like a dog would, lol. In other words, sex without love or passion.

The whole stanza is, There's a time for the second best And there's a time when the feeling's gone But it's hard to be hard I guess When you're shaking like a dog
Does anyone see a drug addiction meaning in this? The love-hate relationship with drugs. "It's hard to be hard when you're shaking like a dog" means it's hard to have resolve or feel hopeful about anything when you're withdrawing.
I guess half of love songs could be interpreted as drug songs, but hey, it fits.
This has to be one of my favourite kills songs.
Don’t mean to be picky but the lyrics are; “Thump like a broken sail”. The original album has the lyrics on the record sleeve.
broken sails "fluff" in the wind
Not trying to be nit-picky, but I think it's "thump" like a broken sail. That makes more sense. :)
Not sure why people dislike just because they think someone might be wrong. Plus, the liner notes say "Thump", so that's what I'm going with.

but "thump" only makes sense if the reference is to the broken sail itself. "fuck like a broken sail" implies persistent unfaithfulness; that makes sense with the rest of the entire song.

but I do agree that it sounds like "thump", the first 109 times I heard this song I totally thought it was thump but then my friends kept hearing something else. The album packet has the real lyrics though. I wonder if The Kills are screwing with our ears. Hmmm.... :)

I'm going with 'fuck like a broken sail'.
What they're doing is providing a simile between the action of phyically act of fucking ('having sex' if you want to put a polite spin on it), with the intensity of a broken sail flapping in the wind.
