The Last Goodbye

I love this song for it's simplicity. I've found myself in a similar situation over the past two years, saying goodbye to a destructive person in my life over and over again. This song has encouraged me to close that door for good and move on without regret. The line, "I heard all you said and I took it to heart" particularly resonates with me because of all the awful things said and done to me that have hurt, and after so much is said and done I am learning to cut my losses and have hope in love again.

As much as I live the classic Kills music style, this song took me as a surprise and I have to say it is a master piece for me!

This is a song about a relationship that has gone cold. The singer is finally coming to terms with the reality that her relationship is nothing more than going through the motions. The two lovers are together more out of habit than out of true love for one another. My assumption is that both parties have identified the presence of a lull in their relationship in the past; but neither party, at least for a good while, wanted to rip the band-aid off and just break up. The singer implies that there was indeed a time where both parties were deeply and passionately in love (or at the very least, she was) but over time, the love became "half-hearted." The lyric "can't quite see the end" implies that she has finally come to the realization that things never will return to the way they were or get any better like she had hoped for in the past. The passion they once had is simply gone and is never going to return. While there may be some lingering love and/or affection between the singer and her lover, the relationship just isn't enough for the singer anymore and she has made the difficult decision to utter the "last goodbye" as opposed to all the insincere and temporary goodbyes made between the lovers in the past. A very sad song to be sure, but one that also shows hope for the future.

I guess this song's pretty self-explanatory.

This is the song for love of my life who actually never really loved me from the heart and just gave up after a short long distance without even trying to close the distance or help me close the distance to move with him.I had to leave him even if it was breaking my heart, but I knew I was not a priority for him. In the end what he confessed was so hurtful..."We do not match up, we are totally two different personalities. Having same interests doesn't mean we should be together. I don't wanna sacrifice my life, money or career to be with you and to focus on you." I regretted for the wasted time, energy, money for him but... Thanks the Kills, cuz with this song I remind myself of not regretting my past and not relying on my heart again.

I imagine that the woman who sings it is in a relationship with a man who's married or otherwise involved with another woman... she loves him passionately and completely, he may love her too but he's also too involved in that other relationship to belong entirely to her... ("a half-hearted love that will never be whole")

he won't leave the other woman so she cannot imagine a future with him ("this dime-a-day love that don't go anywhere")

They have different expectations for their relationship ("an odds and ends love that don't ever match up")

Maybe he confessed to her that he will never leave his other woman ("I heard all you said..." ) and now she know that even though she "loves him to death" she will never be happy with him, and has to leave him so she will have another chance to be happy... She has no regrets for giving it a try, but she knows she has to move on now...

" how can I rely on my heart if I break it with my own two hands" I see 2 possible meanings there :

1) it hurts her so much to leave him that she feels she is breaking her own heart, she wonders how she will ever recover from this

2) if she stayed in this unhappy relationship she would feel that she was breaking her own heart and she couldn't ever trust herself to fall in love again, which is why she has to leave

It could be a breakup song. It could also be about addiction ("dime a day love"). "Last goodbye" could mean an attempt at quitting (drugs), indicating that they have tried quitting before (previous goodbyes) but that this time they really mean it.
