It's Hard To Get Around The Wind Lyrics

It's like you're trying to get to heaven in a hurry
And the queue was shorter than you thought it would be
And the doorman says, "you need to get a wristband"

You've got to lift between the pitfalls
But you're looking like you're low on energy
Did you get out and walk to ensure you'd miss the quicksand?

Looking for a new place to begin
Feeling like it's hard to understand
But as long as you still keep pepperin' the pill
You'll find a way to spit it out, again
And even when you know the way it's gonna blow
It's hard to get around the wind.

Stretching out the neck on your evening
Trying to even out some deficit
But it's saber tooth multi-ball confusion
And you can shriek until you're hollow
Or whisper it the other way
Trying to save the youth without putting your shoes on

Looking for a new place to begin
Feeling like it's hard to understand
But as long as you still keep pepperin' the pill
You'll find a way to spit it out, again
And even when you know the way it's gonna blow
It's hard to get around the wind.

I can hear you through my window
But I'm never quite sure who is who
But they want the world on a dessert spoon
It always sounds like they're fightin'
Or as if that's what they're about to do
It might not hurt now but it's going to hurt soon

Personally, i think this is about a person who keeps attempting suicide, but keeps stopping half way through in hope that someone will realize without it being obvious to themselves or others around them.

'Its like you're trying to get to heaven in a hurry but the queue was shorter than you thought it would be' i take this as they are trying to end their lives and they never realized that if they wanted to it would be so easy, and that no one is going to stop them due to them not telling anyone, and they only realized this when it came to doing it. And its all came a bit overwhelming. In a non-obvious way.

'Did you get out and walk, to ensure you miss the quicksand?' They deliberately stopped before it was to late. She stopped the journey of suicide with intention.

And this links with 'but as long as you still keep peppering the pill, you'll find a way to spit it out again' Meaning the walking is like the peppering, this is the barrier that stops them. The quicksand is the swallowing. They walked to miss the quicksand. They peppered to spit it out. They stopped to avoid death.

'And even when you know the way its going to blow, its hard to get around the wind.' The wind is themselves and their mind and the fear. They know whats going to happen if they go through with it, but they keep stopping themselves, and its hard to get past the fear.

'it always sounds like their fighting' i personally think this is a two-sided mind. One saying, do it. One saying, don't, there's still hope' 'not quite sure who is who' They dont know if its their negative mind telling them to do it, or if its their negative mind saying dont, theres still worse that could happen. Or is its their positive saying to stop, there is hope. Or to do it, they'll be happier if they aren't here.

'it might not hurt now, but its going to hurt soon' It might not hurt taking all the pills, but the decision once made will, giving it be the wrong decision.

This song is a very powerful song. This song is a story. Despite having the same sort of edge to it, this is the story of whoever is listening to it. To every person, is a different concept. And every concept, has a story behind it.

I personally interpret this song as being about depression. But that just may be because that way I can relate it more to me/my experiences but here goes:

"It's like you're trying to get to heaven in a hurry, And the queue was shorter than you thought it would be, And the doorman says, You need to get a wristband."

The person attempted/is thinking about suicide ("trying to get to heaven in a hurry"), but the "doorman" (symbolizing a god figure) basically says it's not their time yet.

"You got a lift between the pitfalls, But you're looking like your low on energy, Did you get out and walk, To ensure you'd miss the quicksand?"

The speaker is trying to encourage this depressed person to just pick themselves up and be positive despite all the crap that might have happened to them. But when you're depressed you're tired [and of course sad] all the time so this is really hard to do. It also feels like getting the life and light in your eyes sucked out of you which could be what the "quicksand" is referring to but I'm not sure.

"Looking for a new place to begin, Feeling like it's hard to understand, But as long as you still keep peppering the pill, You'll find a way to spit it out again."

This made me think of the person sitting in therapy, trying to restart their life like their psychiatrist says but can't really understand why they're so depressed. And unfortunately, how the meaning behind why they're depressed isn't so important because as long as they keep taking their antidepressants they should be fine (cough, cough).

"And even when you know the way it's gonna blow, It's hard to get around the wind." Even when you know you're depressed and things really aren't that bad you still can't pull yourself out of the black hole you're in.

"Stretching out the neck on your evening, Trying to even out some deficits, But it's sabertooth multi-ball confusion."

The person stays up late at night because they're unhappy and discontent and trying to just find something to make them happy before they go to bed but it's useless.

"And you can shriek until you're hollow, Or whisper it the other way," You can yell/outwardly project your anger at how you're feeling so depressed or can quietly suffer and perhaps self-harm/have disordered eating etc.

"I can hear you through my window, But I'm never quite sure who is who, But they want the world on a dessert spoon."

It kind of sounds like the speaker doesn't really understand the person's depression, they just think that they want everything to come easy to them and that life is sometimes hard and you have to just get through it.

"It always sounds like they're fighting, Or if that's what they are about to do, It might not hurt now but it's gonna hurt soon."

I dunno, this always just reminds me of parents fighting so it made me think that perhaps this is a flashback to why the person's so depressed. Maybe they came from a home where their parents were always fighting/abusive towards one another and at first it didn't affect them but now it's festered into this depression.

I think the song is about the unpredictability of the future and life in general. And it also speaks to the weird feelings you have in in between phases of your life.

The main conflict of the book is Oliver's struggle to keep his parents together while also trying to lose his virginity. The song is about struggle, I thought at first that Alex singing to Oliver, telling him that he's trying to grow up too fast, and that if he'd stop "peppering the pill" with his worry about his parents, he'd probably have a better chance with the girls. The whole thing is about him keeping his head up even when it's hard - "get around the wind" resonates as a nautical term to me, it's difficult to sail into the wind even if you can anticipate it.

The last verse though is about Oliver's parents. "They want the world on a dessert spoon" they want it all to be easy, but it's not, so their going through this divorce. "It always sounds like their fighting, or if that's what they're about to do" is pretty self explanatory. Oliver can hear them fighting all the time. "It doesn't hurt now, but it's gonna hurt soon" they're not done yet, but they're going to be soon, and Oliver's world is going to change.

People should stop tying the song to the film. These songs were written before he realized they were gonna be a part of a soundtrack.

Anyways, I think the song is about a relationship that someone keeps chasing even though they knows it's never gonna work out. And the line "It's hard to get around the wind" means it's hard to get over this person. Done.

"It's hard to get around the wind" would be similar to spitting into the wind. It's a struggele. It's a fight. It's blocking you from moving forward. It pushes you back. You can't beat the wind. The loss is inevitable (which I probably cannot spell and do NOT wish to look up online). I don't believe it's about getting over anybody. It's about the futility of the relationship in the state it is in at present, which is why s/he's looking for a new beginning. It could be with her/him or just an entirely new start...

I totally agree with this meaning... It's just the way I see it too...

“It's Hard to Get Around the Wind” shows the struggle someone has when trying to attain something that is almost unattainable. He or she may realize that it is actually difficult to attain. He or she may go through many obstacles. He or she may even create his or her own obstacles. Through these obstacles, he or she may climax into frustration and desperation. Finally, he or she may abandon his or her primary goal of attaining what he or she wants. “It's Hard to Get Around the Wind” teaches that you need to prepare before achieving what you want. It also teaches that you should have a pre-conceived notion that it is not going to be easy. Ultimately, it teaches that you should not turn your frustration into burnout, but into energy to get into heaven. It is, indeed, hard to get around the wind.

i'll do this quickly: quicksand, so in the book of the same name 'Submarine', Oliver intentionally gets stuck in quicksand like mud. eh i guess it wasn't quicksand so maybe this doesn't even apply haha nvm...

well the first verse strikes me as about to get something, then being unable to. and the title seems like the theme of struggling against an impediment of some sort. i'll stick with that.

English isn't my first language so this song is quite difficult to interpret for me.

Some of the lyrics I can't really tell what he's talking about but after all and with that sad sound and ending I can only think on one thing.

Deception. Is like when you know someone or something is gonna go all wrong, but even if you know that, it is like really difficult to not feel bad about it.

Yeah, that's what I get from this song.

I also think that this song is about depression and contemplating suicide.

It's like you're trying to get to heaven in a hurry, And the queue was shorter than you thought it would be, And the doorman says, You need to get a wristband.

As already mentioned, it's about this person thinking about suicide, and then realizing how easy it would be if one just committed to it. But at that point, he just doesn't have the guts to go through with it, and thus he gets rejected by the doorman. I think that the wristband is a metaphor for slitting your wrists, and the person can't come back without actually intending to kill himself, without a bracelet.

You got a lift between the pitfalls, But you're looking like your low on energy, Did you get out and walk, To ensure you'd miss the quicksand?

Even though there are people to help and give a lift between the pitfalls, the subject still is robbed of energy because of the depression. The speaker wonders whether the suicidal person is deliberately postponing death, the quicksand, because he doesn't want to to die or if it's just a matter of time.

Looking for a new place to begin, Feeling like it's hard to understand, But as long as you still keep peppering the pill, You'll find a way to spit it out again.

The person in the song just wants to escape his current situation but doesn't know whether he should keep struggling to fight off his depression or if suicide is the way to go. But as long as he can remind himself about the bitterness of death, he can manage to spit out those pills with which he intends to end his life.

And even when you know the way it's gonna blow, It's hard to get around the wind.

He knows which two paths lies ahead of him, and what's expected of him if he chooses them; he can't go on the way he does, so he either has to get himself together and go on with his life or commit suicide. But although he knows what he has to do, he just cannot get himself to do either of it - he can't get around the wind.

Stretching out the neck on your evening, Trying to even out some deficits, But it's sabertooth multi-ball confusion.

In bed at night, he's still trying to decide what to do by weighing the pros and cons and then decide which alternative is better, but he can't reach a decision because there are too many things to bear in mind, and he risks doing more harm than virtue.

And you can shriek until you're hollow, Or whisper it the other way, Trying to save the youth without putting your shoes on.

It means that he can act it out whatever way he wants; by shrieking it, or keeping his sadness to himself, but this doesn't change the fact that in order for something to change, he has to take measures. It won't just go away all by itself - the narrator realizes this, and points out that it's just wishful thinking from the depressed person's side to believe that he could save his youth and straighten things out without even having to put his shoes on.

I can hear you through my window, But I'm never quite sure who is who, But they want the world on a dessert spoon.

There is this struggle going on inside of the person in the story. He's got two voices - one telling him to let go, and one to keep going, but it's hard to tell one from the other because they are both so dominant and have so much to say. However, both of the voices simplifies the situation by insinuating that it's either black or white. The world just is a lot more complicated than that - it doesn't fit on a dessert spoon.

It always sounds like they're fighting, Or if that's what they are about to do, It might not hurt now but it's gonna hurt soon.

It sure sounds as though the two voices are fighting with each other, but "Or if that's what they are about to do" implies that it might have only started and that there's even more to come. It think that the last line is expressed by both voices, trying to convince the other of their own opinion on the matter. The voice that encourages suicide means that he might feel quite alright at the moment, but he will feel bad again soon. The second voice on the other hand, means that he might feel ready to commit suicide right there and then, but he doesn't really know the pain that comes with it.

It's a quite good song, especially when you look into it like this.
