A lot of Strokes song are about relationships/one night stands/ or just situations with women in general. I think this is no different. It's almost like this is going on in the guy's head, it reminds me of Radiohead a little bit:

-I think he messed it up with her somehow and is trying to figure out why.. he wishes she would tell him the real reason, maybe it's on his mind especially when he comes home alone at the end of every day.

-He trys to understand why they don't talk anymore, he thinks it's B.S. mostly because she wasn't honest about it.

-I think he could be proving himself here (to her), he can do or handle anything, ready to be free with her... he can't so he still wants to know why.

-He did ask her to be honest OR he wants her to be but she's dodged the issue. Either way, by the end he doesn't want to force them together, but he's still got feelings and is a little confused/pissed off. Not sure if he says anything other than "I want a..." but whatever it is he can't have it.

I could be way wrong about this but it's just how I read it, this album comes at you at different angles (haha) but this song is my favorite.

This is really weird, but it makes sense, if you think about it. I think that's what he's saying through all that heavy synth and distortion anyway.
