The Breakup Lyrics
When the ice breaks
When the hearts shake in the town
And it marks the end of winter
The end of our love for now
and you spent your summers
Summers in the south in the Central Rockies
And I left you now
Well I do
I I I never thought it was true
Under the hill star
Above the city tonight
And past the cemetery
Where my father tried to start a new life
And I held you tight
We were waiting for the breakup
And all the cracks in the ice
And well I do
I I I never thought it was true
Cut a line in the snow with our boots
Split the city in two
From Abasand and Coker too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
And you will find me
When the summer dies
Stuck in McMurray
I'll be waiting for the ice
And well I do
I I I never thought it was true
Cut a line in the snow with our boots
Split this city in two
From Abasand and Coker too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
When the hearts shake in the town
And it marks the end of winter
The end of our love for now
and you spent your summers
Summers in the south in the Central Rockies
And I left you now
I I I never thought it was true
Above the city tonight
And past the cemetery
Where my father tried to start a new life
And I held you tight
We were waiting for the breakup
And all the cracks in the ice
I I I never thought it was true
Cut a line in the snow with our boots
Split the city in two
From Abasand and Coker too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
When the summer dies
Stuck in McMurray
I'll be waiting for the ice
I I I never thought it was true
Cut a line in the snow with our boots
Split this city in two
From Abasand and Coker too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too
Ice is gone you'll leave it too

my original thought is that this is about a death. perhaps of a famly member like a sibling or a mother.
I think the lyric is supposed to be "From Abasand and Coker Two" referring to the oil sands sites in Ft. Mac. I spent a few weeks there and can't say I was enchanted but there's a lot of good people.
I grew up in Northern Alberta so know a little bit about that he's talking about. 'The breakup' refers to spring breakup. There are a lot of rigs and drill sites in northern Alberta that are only accessible during the winter because the roads that get you there are too wet and muddy for big trucks to get there in the summer.
Northern Alberta also has a lot of seasonal workers and this girl's father is one of them. The spring breakup not only means the end of winter, but the end of his relationship because she'll be moving back to the central rockies with her family.
