Under Cover of Darkness Lyrics
Slip back out of whack at your best
It's a nightmare
So I'm joining the army
Know how folks back out, I still call
Will you wait for me now?
We got the right 'cause they'll fight to use it
Got everything but you can just choose it
I want to be a puppet on a string
Don't go that way
I'll wait for you
And I'm tired of all your friends
They're still at your door
And I won't, I better call you
So long my friend and adversary
But I will call you
Get dressed jump out of bed and do it best
Are you ok?
I've been out around this town
Everybody's been singing the same song for ten years
I'll wait for you
Will you wait for me too?
And they sacrifice their lives
In their land of all closed eyes
I've been saying we're beaten down, I won't say it again
So long, my end
The sorry embrace
Don't go that way
I'll wait for you
I'm tired of all your friends
Knocking down your door
Get up in the morning, give it your all
So long my friend and adversary
I'll wait for you
It's a nightmare
So I'm joining the army
Will you wait for me now?
Got everything but you can just choose it
I want to be a puppet on a string
I'll wait for you
They're still at your door
And I won't, I better call you
But I will call you
Are you ok?
I've been out around this town
Everybody's been singing the same song for ten years
Will you wait for me too?
In their land of all closed eyes
I've been saying we're beaten down, I won't say it again
The sorry embrace
I'll wait for you
Knocking down your door
Get up in the morning, give it your all
So long my friend and adversary
I'll wait for you

This is the undisclosed title track of the album. It is about what the band has gone through in the last 5 years. Seperately. The album is titled Angles because of all the different directions the members went through after the exhaustion of the 05-07 tours. They all had solo ventures (Valensi did photography and guested on albums including Sia's '10 release). This song is the backbone of the idea of spliting up and finally coming back together.
Know how folks back out, I still call Will you hate for me now?
-They tried to get back together but not all members were aboard at the same time-
Don't go that way I'll wait for you
-Don't do that solo album!! Go back to the band that made you big. Ok, you did, but I will be here when the strokes reform-
Get dressed jump out of bed and do it best Are you ok? I've been out around this town Everybody's been singing the same song ten years
-This is a reference to Last Nite and how much they hate the song but it is still their most popular one. Julian is saying move the fuck on!-
I'll wait for you Will you wait for me too?
-Jules is saying he'll wait for the band members/strokes fans and asking if they'll wait for him-
And they sacrifice their lives In our land are all closed eyes I've been saying we're beaten down, I won't say it again
-The last line in this verse is jules telling the members they have been beaten down as a group, they were overplayed and billed as the saviours of rock and roll. That is too much-
After watching the video for this song, I think you're absolutely right. Julian is frustrated, waiting for everyone to finish up their side-projects and they're finally get back together.

I laughed a little when Julian threw the microphone stand at the "Everybody's been singing the same song ten years" part - it's definitely a reference to Last Nite.

All of what you said is completely wrong. It's probably because you heard the lyrics wrong.

Plus Julian said it was a cheesy love song about a guy who joins the army and them going through all that. In addition to that Julian also did a couple of side projects.
The problem with your interpretation is that Julian Casablancas didn't write this song... look at the bottom of the lyrics, it was written by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren. On this album a lot of other band members wrote the songs; Julian Casablancas recorded his parts separate from the rest of them a lot so the rest of the band would have a bigger part in it.

FINALLY!!!! This song is great. Reminds me of the Is This It album. You think the "Everybody's been singing the same song ten years" line is a reference to the Is This It album?
It's in reference to "Last Nite". If you watch the video, he throws the microphone like he did in Last Nite.

People are saying it's about the fight between the band but I think it's about war. I mean, he explicitly sings "I'm joining the army" and then he's asking someone to wait for him.
And I think the lyrics are: And I'm tired of all your friends Enlisting at your door And I won't, I better call you
Also Julian pretends he's shooting a gun in the music video.
Then "And they sacrifice their lives In their land of all closed eyes" is pretty explicit aswell.
@inés10784 also Julian sings "Get dressed jump out of bed and do it best", it's a life vest

@inés10784 "land of all closed eyes" could mean the way Islam blinds people sometimes... Js

The song displays great frustration and longing. It's wonderful.

Regardless it's a great song.
Perfectly captures the tension the Strokes must have felt after the completion of FIOE and they all split up for their own solo projects
I heard it the same way, Gershwin. I'm pretty positive that yours are right.

I guess it's about someone who works in the military and has a girlfriend. It's cheesy, I guess, but it's about having to leave a loved one behind.
-Julian Casablancas.
@harrymuse Ikr, everyone looking for meanings that have nothing to do when in the beginning of the song it says "So I'm joining the army", Idk in my opinipon trhe song is about a guy enlisting for the Iraq war. "Everybody's been singing the song for ten years", The song came out on 2011, ten years after the Iraq war started.

Great song.
"i've been all around this town/everyone's been singing the same song for 10 years" compared to the song last night from "is this it?" with the lyric "i've been in town for just about 15 minutes now"
coincidence? i think not.

in both music videos, Julian throws the mic stand in the same javelin-like manner.

i'm in love with this song. and it came out at such a fitting time, where the lyrics make perfect sense to me. i just love that.
Many of you have the lyrics wrong. A lot of you are over thinking this song. Frontman Julian Casablancas explained the song's meaning to NME magazine: "I guess it's about someone who works in the military and has a girlfriend. It's cheesy, I guess, but it's about having to leave a loved one behind."
Super helpful. Julian mumbles a f***ton, now i can finally sing along without making stuff up
