Streetlights Lyrics
Hold tight for heartbreak
Buckle up for loneliness
Right time to get away
Where I'm going I couldn't care
I'm bored and I'm afraid
I'm falling like rain for you
So tired and picking skin
Just cos it's something to do
Bored girls and sad boys
Dull roads to anywhere
Bad sex and ethanol
High scores on solitaire
I'm numb and getting off
Getting real numb with you
Big plans that never come
Holding out for something new
Can anybody hear me?
Is anybody out there?
Not a soul in a streetlight
This might be love (x2)
Hold tight for heartbreak
Buckle up for loneliness
Right time to get away
Where I'm going I couldn't care
Dead dreams and dirty clothes
Calls that are Long overdue
Cheap highs and souvenirs
So many knots that I'll never undo
Can anybody hear me?
Is anybody out there?
Not a soul in a streetlight
This might be love (x4)
Buckle up for loneliness
Right time to get away
Where I'm going I couldn't care
I'm falling like rain for you
So tired and picking skin
Just cos it's something to do
Dull roads to anywhere
Bad sex and ethanol
High scores on solitaire
Getting real numb with you
Big plans that never come
Holding out for something new
Is anybody out there?
Not a soul in a streetlight
This might be love (x2)
Buckle up for loneliness
Right time to get away
Where I'm going I couldn't care
Calls that are Long overdue
Cheap highs and souvenirs
So many knots that I'll never undo
Is anybody out there?
Not a soul in a streetlight
This might be love (x4)

Could this song be about getting into relationships that are definitely heading right to the doom from the beginning?

I think it's about someone who has had so many FWBs and one night stands that he doesn't know what love is or how to distinguish it from those kinds of relationships. Maybe all the sex has left him jaded and he isn't interested in finding true love, just sex.
I think this is all about a man who always kisses and then runs. He always has one nights stands, and has meaningless sex with any fit girl. "Hold tight for heartbreak. Buckle up for loneliness. Right time to get away. Where I'm going I couldn't care." These lyrics suggest that he is telling the girl, after this, you will just be lonely and sad again, because there is no way i am staying with you. I am only in it for the sex. And that he always gets away at the perfect time, so no strings are attached. He doesn't care where he is going next. He only cares about himself. "I'm bored and I'm afraid. I'm falling like rain for you," in my opinion this implies that he is afraid, because he is starting to fall in love with one of his one night stands, which has never happened before. "Bad sex and ethanol," as the sex is meaningless and he never actually loves the person he is having sex with, it can sometimes be bad. And ethanol is alcohol, so this obviously means, that along side the sex, he also drinks away his problems.
Now the chorus is quite interesting, it could have many meanings, but to me there is only one that seems to fit perfectly..."Can anybody hear me? Is anybody out there? Not a soul in a streetlight. This might be love .This might be love." To me this means that he has fallen in love (this might be love) and doesn't know how to deal with it, so he asks for help. "Not a soul in a streetlight" means no one can help. they tell him to deal with it and stop running for love and enhance it!
"Calls that are Long overdue," always reminds me of phone sex. When he can't be bothered to have sex with another women, he just has phone sex, which always ends being way longer than he expects. "Cheap highs," might mean that all the fun from sex is always cheap yet always enjoyable.
I hope this helped, i am not sure whether my interpretation of this song is right, but it seems to fit-ish? Thank you for reading! :)
Charles as quoted as saying "it's not metaphorical but literal".
So I assume it really means what it says at face value; growing up in a dull town/suburb with nothing to do. In that context, I assume "this might be love" is kind of ironic.
