Big Burned Hand Lyrics
She had a white-hot pistol and a homemade heart tattoo
Singing, "one's to give and one's to take away,
But neither of them will keep you off your knees"
Her children bowed ad bolted off the stage
While the lion and the lamb kept fighting for the shade tree
He had a couple of coke bottles full of gasoline
Singing, "all I love is all that I allow"
And he blew me a kiss off a big burned hand
I nearly choked with smoke and fell down
While the lion and the lamb kept shooting at a tin can
She had a purple heart and mother's milk in a plastic cup
Singing, "one will lay you gently in the grave,
And one's the flag you fold before you go"
When the curtain rose the crowd was blown away
While the lion and the lamb kept fucking in the back row
I have the lyrics here in front of me on the CD's inlay:
When the arrogant goddess of love came to steal my shoes She had a white-hot pistol and a homemade heart tattoo Singing, "one's to give and one's to take away, But neither of them will keep you off your knees" Her children bowed ad bolted off the stage While the lion and the lamb kept fighting for the shade tree
When the winsome god of war came to set me free He had a couple of coke bottles full of gasoline Singing, "all I love is all hat I allow" And he blew me a kiss off a big burned hand I nearly choked with smoke and fell down While the lion and the lamb kept shooting at a tin can
When the gun shy goddess of love came back to patch things up She had a purple heart and mother's milk in a plastic cup Singing, "one will lay you gently in the grave, And one's the flag you fold before you go" When the curtain rose the crowd was blown away While the lion and the lamb kept fucking in the back row
This song has a simple yet beautiful melody in a ballad/story type kind of motive. The lyrics are absolutely relevant to all humanity and the world right now, which makes perfect sense because the album is called 4AD. What brilliant and insightful lyrics. The lyrics are slightly liberal, but because they encompass all things about humanity which the majority of humanity in this age fail to realize. Here is my take on the lyrics.

“When the arrogant goddess of love came to steal my shoes” “The arrogant goddess “referring to something righteous like mother nature/the earth/earthly wisdom/love because she is self-righteous and arrogant, yet full of love as she is creator. And she “steals my shoes” refers to taking his place invading his life with thought and reason.
“She had a white-hot pistol and a homemade heart tattoo” something manmade, “the pistol” in this case refers to manmade violence, violence being the “white hot”. The “homemade heart tattoo” is knowledge something almost unattainable unless you are connected with nature.
“Singing, ‘one’s to give and one’s to take away But neither of them will keep you off your knees” means precisely that. You can give or take away violence or love /knowledge/understanding, depending on your life situation, your feelings, your thoughts, but no matter what you do, you will still die as, “neither of them will keep you off your knees”.
And this is a nice reverse analogy… “Her children bowed and bolted off the stage” refers to animals/nature respecting the ways of life and truth by bowing down. However, the “lion and the lamb kept fighting for the shade tree”. “Lion and lamb” is human kind and the difference of opinion between all humans, and they fight for meaningless things that we think we need, “fighting for the shade tree”. “Shade” or possessions are a commodity and do not define who we are.
“when the winsome god of war came to set me free” winsome god refers to ideas of the mind, human ideas, faulted ideas, and they supposedly set him free, but with anger and violence, “he had a couple of coke bottles full of gasoline” probably to combat the ideals of earthly wisdom/ mother nature.
“singing, ‘all I love is all that I allow’” human frailty and stupidity is based solely on what we intake and what we “allow” ourselves to “love”/ like, such as ideas, political views, etc.
“And he blew me a kiss off a big burned hand”. The “kiss” refers to a stroke of genius that humans sometimes come up with, but is it really a stroke of genius? Or is it possible that it is just someone else’s idea, whether from this life or the lives of others before us, that has been thought of or “burned” before. The “big burned hand” meaning the collective, recycled ideas of human kind.
“I nearly choked with smoke and fell down” I choked on the “smoke” or the idea of living my life without regard to anyone or anything else and “fell down” or was appalled/ in disbelief/struck with horror etc.
“While the lion and the lamb kept shooting at a tin can” And I am having this epiphany that I should do worldly things and look out for nature and my fellow man “lion and the lamb” is “ shooting at a tin can” or shooting at an inanimate object or idea of lesser or meaningless value.
“When the gun shy goddess of love came back to patch things up” “gun shy goddess” meaning a forgiving mother nature or representation of truth who cannot and does not pass judgment, hence why she’s “gun shy”. She came back to “patch things up” or help me/ save me from my own head of violent thoughts.
“She had a purple heart and mother’s milk in a plastic cup” “Purple heart” could mean honor or reputation and “mother’s milk” is origins or family, the source of where you came from, but its in a “plastic cup “ or has been deformed by humanity through the use of make-up, clothes, cars, things you buy that distinguish high class taste, but in this day and age have become the thing that represent you. So, “mother’s milk in a plastic cup” is essentially you, but a society-conscious you.
“Singing, “one will lay you gently in the grave, and one’s the flag you fold before you go” meaning simply that. One goes with you and one stays behind in this world for people to remember you by. So, will people remember what you did or what you looked like?
“When the curtain rose the crowd was blown away while the lion and the lamb kept fucking in the back row” People who realize what it is to be connected with all human nature and animal nature/ nature in general, realize the importance of these words, or the words that mother nature or truth is speaking to them. However, the “lion and the lamb” keep going on procreating “fucking” without meaning, refusing to pay attention to the truth because they are in “the back row”.
Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, had a famous affair with Ares, the Greek god of war. They had three children: Harmonia (Harmony), Phobus (Fear), and Deimos (Terror).

"You blew me a kiss OFF a big burned hand"? Not sure if it's "off" or "of"
"I nearly choked with smoke and fell down"
"(Saying?) one's to lay you gently in the grave And one's to (flag?) you (full?) before you go"
"When the curtain rose, the crowd was blown away By the lion and the lamb (?) fucking in the back (?)" It sounds like road, but "in the back road" is a weird phrase
It's "back row"
Sounds like "homemade heart tattoo" and "I nearly choked with smoke and fell down"
The lion and the lamb traditionally represent Jesus. In this song, they pay no attention to the goings-on of the world. Instead, it's the war and love of humanity that create and fix problems.
