Hymn For The Missing Lyrics
I tried to walk together
But the night was growing dark
Thought you were beside me
But I reached and you were gone
Sometimes I hear you calling
From some lost and distant shore
I hear you crying softly before the way it was before
Where are you now
Are you lost
Will I find you again
Are you alone
Are you afraid
Are you searching for me
Why did you go I had to stay
Now I'm reaching for you
Will you wait, will you wait
Will I see you again
You took it with you when you left
These scars are just a trace
Now it wonders lost and wounded
This heart that I misplaced
Where are you now
Are you lost
Will I find you again
Are you alone
Are you afraid
Are you searching for me
Why did you go I had to stay
Now I'm reaching for you
Will you wait, will you wait
Will I see you again
But the night was growing dark
Thought you were beside me
But I reached and you were gone
Sometimes I hear you calling
From some lost and distant shore
I hear you crying softly before the way it was before
Are you lost
Will I find you again
Are you alone
Are you afraid
Are you searching for me
Why did you go I had to stay
Now I'm reaching for you
Will you wait, will you wait
Will I see you again
These scars are just a trace
Now it wonders lost and wounded
This heart that I misplaced
Are you lost
Will I find you again
Are you alone
Are you afraid
Are you searching for me
Why did you go I had to stay
Now I'm reaching for you
Will you wait, will you wait
Will I see you again

this is GOD talking to us. we are the lost, and we need to find our way back to him.
that's why it's called a hymn :P

Basically, it's about a relationship. It could be a boy-girl, or a parent-child, or friend-friend relationship. Basically, though, assuming it isn't a parent-child relationship, it seems to be about growing apart from an important person in your life. You feel that you are on the right track in life, but (it implies) that they are on the wrong track in life. You want them back, but you've grown too far apart, and the void seems impenetrable. This would definitely make sense with a boy-girl relationship.
The whole concept of the album is about finding your identity. This song seems to be about losing someone important to you, which definitely has a huge effect on your identity.
Couldn't agree with you more! It's about a relationship whether it be between people or people and God or maybe even both.

Say the song is about a boy and a girl. It could be something else, but i feel the verse 2 is more powerful if it's about love. The boy is a solid christian but the girl isn't sure of her faith - "the night was growing dark" (picked it this way because I know a story where it is so) All seems to be good, but then as her faith begins to crumble and she slips back to...

The boy is a solid christian but the girl isn't sure of her faith - "the night was growing dark" (picked it this way because I know a story where it is so) All seems to be good, but then as her faith begins to crumble and she slips back to her "old self", the relationship loosens, too. "Thought you were beside me But I reached and you were gone" However, the girl isn't fully lost. The last lines in verse 1 imply that she longs back to the relationship with the boy and simultaneously with God. "I hear you crying softly for the way it was before"
The chorus is basically the cry of the boy (and God, too!) to the girl who went missing. He is desperately missing her and worried that is she lost forever.
Verse 2 is powerful, as I said. "You took it with you when you left These scars are just a trace Now it wonders lost and wounded This heart that I misplaced" As the girl left the boy (because she left God), she took his heart with her and all the boy has left is the scars. His broken heart is wondering somewhere between his feelings for her, his love for God and the thought of losing her.
I think the title tells me all. I feel it's about someone who has lost another (who has vanished/kidnapped or passed on) like how a parent loses a child when they go missing.
I can see this in two senses. One of which I'm currently going through.
The first is he's lost himself, can't find him, and is wondering if the half of himself he lost is looking for him too, like a missing person. Just in this case, a soul-searching type of missing. I'm currently going through this myself with some things that my ex has said that has caused me to go into some deep depressions and this song totally gives off that same type of vibe.
The second, believe it or not, is a relationship that didn't really end, it just vanished from both parties. Both asleep, and then one of them wakes up and leaves. As if to leave no trace behind. The party that is hurt, lost and confused is trying to figure out why they left.
'This heart I misplaced' he put his heart into the relationship, and now that it's over, he knows he put too much of himself in it.
Your second interpretation is beautiful. I had a friend who I knew since kindergarten. I'd always called him my best friend but I don't feel like he valued our friendship as much as I did. One day he moved out to western Kansas and I've never seen him since, I never even got to say goodbye still haven't.

I've read a lot of different interpretations of this song, so it could be like another one of Red's song, "Darkest Part", which was written with multiple "correct" interpretations. I personally think that this song was written about a deceased family member or friend. In the beginning of the song it says "Thought you were beside me, but I reached and you were gone, sometimes I hear you calling'', I think it's talking about all the memories of this person and how they (person's who is singing) are slowly losing memories of them and kind of moving on.At the part that starts with "Where are you now", and ends with "Will I see you again" I interpret that the person's perspective this is coming from is kind of doubting the bible/Christ. As Christians, everyone at one point or another questions/doubts God's word, especially after the death of someone close. The heartbreak after the death of someone close is devastating and you wonder, "will I ever see them again", etc. That's by interpretation of "Hymn for the Missing".
I think it's about, some who ran away from home "where are you now? Are you lost? Will I find you again? Why did you go? I had to stay. Now I'm reaching for you." He's wondering where. He/she went. They ran away and he's hoping to find them soon. Why did they have to leave? "why did you go I had to stay" is saying why did they gave to leave him. "Took it when you when you left the scars are just a trace." Took his heart, his everything when they left. "Now it wonders lost and wounded this heart that I missplaced." He lost himself when that person left.
That's just my opinion that's what it sounds like to me.. I love this song <3 it!!!
Ok I think this song is about a friendship between two close friends and they have been having problems and the one friend wants to try and fix it and they have had these types of problems before. The other friend has given up on that friend and leaves them. The first friend is now wondering if they will ever see them again and is asking for forgiveness. While doing this the first friend wonders a lot of things about the other friend like of they are afraid if that is the end of a good friendship
I believe this song could be dialogue between two different people but it also could be dialogue between God and a man. The first verse "I tried to walk together, But the night was growing dark, Thought you were beside me, But I reached and you were gone, Sometimes I hear you calling" is man's confession that he has lost God. The chorus in the song is God's response, "Where are you now, Are you lost, Will I find you again, Are you alone, Are you afraid, Are you searching for me?"
Very good idea! The notion that the first verse comes from a human perspective, and the chorus is sung by God seems very compatible. Can you think of any way the second verse would make sense with it though?

I agree I thought the same thing when I heard the song, I don't think that it's just the chorus is when God is talking though I wanna say it splits at Sometimes I hear you calling at some lost and distant shore. God is answering saying I hear you calling for me but, where are you now? It's really hard to actually tell how they intended it sense there is only one guy singing it but, that's how I see it ^_^

The song as a whole seems to be compatible with the story which the album is based off of, Til We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. It seems to be from the main character Orual's perspective, talking to Psyche, another character. Can anyone think of a modern day Orual-Psyche relationship, for those who have read the book?
i absolutley love this song....i know this is supposed to be God talking to us. but i can also see it as me talking to my friend who jus randomly decided hey i dont want anything to do with you anymore and now wont ttm....so this song depresses the crap outa me....
