Black River Blues Lyrics

Black river blues,
My cheatin’ heart’s been torn in two.
I’d love to stay with you awhile,
But I’ve got to burn one thousand black river miles,

Before I sleep, before I rest.
‘Cause I’ve got two loves burnin’ holes inside my chest,
And it’s something you know I gotta do,
Before I lay me down to sleep here beside you.

When I get home…
When I get home…
When I get home…

There’s a two-lane highway in my mind.
My heart’s divided by white lines.
So what am I supposed to do,
When the lane I love is the lane takes me further from you?

And that black river’s callin’ my name,
And if I don’t go I know I’ll go insane.
And I’ll walk a thousand miles in these worn out shoes,
And then I’ll lay me down to sleep here beside you

When I get home…
When I get home…
When I get home…

I think this song might be about a drug addiction.

"There’s a two-lane highway in my mind." - Having to choose drugs or relationships.

"My heart’s divided by white lines." - White lines = Cocaine.

"When the lane I love is the lane takes me further from you" - Being addicted and needing a fix, while harming relationships.

My Interpretation

@jer1030256 Good catch, as highways are divided by yellow lines. Genius song writing.

I think this song isn't about a man who is cheating on his wife. I think it's more about the feeling that he gets while being on the road. He even compares his heart and mind to a Two lane High Way.

I agree, "two loves" the road and the ol' lady.
