Long Live Lyrics
I say remember this moment
In the back of my mind
The time we stood with our shaking hands
The crowds in stands went wild
We were the kings and the queens
And they read off our names
The night you danced like you knew our lives
Would never be the same
You held your head like a hero
On a history book page
It was the end of a decade
But the start of an age
Long live the walls we crashed through
All the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
I was screaming, "long live all the magic we made"
And bring on all the pretenders
One day we will be remembered
I said remember this feeling
I passed the pictures around
Of all the years that we stood there on the sidelines
Wishing for right now
We are the kings and the queens
You traded your baseball cap for a crown
When they gave us our trophies
And we held them up for our town
And the cynics were outraged
Screaming, "this is absurd"
'Cause for a moment a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world
Long live the walls we crashed through
All the kingdom lights shined just for me and you
I was screaming, "long live all the magic we made"
And bring on all the pretenders
I'm not afraid
Long live all the mountains we moved
I had the time of my life
Fighting dragons with you
I was screaming, "long live the look on your face"
And bring on all the pretenders
One day we will be remembered
Hold on to spinning around
Confetti falls to the ground
May these memories break ???
And you take a moment
Promise me this:
That you'll stand by me forever
But if God forbid fate should step in
And force us into a goodbye
If you have children someday
When they point to the pictures
Please tell them my name
Tell them how the crowds went wild
Tell them how I hope they shine
Long live the walls we crashed through
I had the time of my life with you
Long, long live the walls we crashed through
All the candlelight shined just for me and you
And I was screaming, "long live all the magic we made"
And bring on all the pretenders
I'm not afraid
Singing long live all the mountains we moved
I had the time of my life
Fighting dragons with you

This song absolutely makes me think of graduating high school.
The crowds in stands went wild We were the kings and the queens And they read off our names
It just totally makes me think of the sensation when your name gets called and you walk across the stage to get your diploma. For that one little moment, you and all of your friends, no matter how rebellious or how studious or how cool or unpopular you were, your little "band of thieves in ripped up jeans go to rule the world" just for that one special moment.
It was the end of a decade But the start of an age
At least for me, I just graduated in 2010, and those words absolutely 100% described how I felt about everything; the end of a decade, the end of an entire chapter of my life, but at the same time something completely new and unknown and exciting coming up.
The night you danced like you knew our lives Would never be the same
Makes me think of my grad night- we had our graduation ceremony, and then we all got on a bus and went to an all night party, the last time that our entire class would be together- ever. I think we all knew that the next time we all saw each other all of our lives would be different.
When they point to the pictures Please tell them my name Tell them how the crowds went wild Tell them how I hope they shine
I love this part of the song. To me, at least, this song is about graduating. Overall, I think it's about the sensation of leaving everyone you grew up with, fought dragons with, moved mountains with. But I think at a deeper level it's about that one special person- that highschool sweetheart or whatever. And while you both realize that life is moving on, you're making that promise to each other to always remember the awesome and inspiring times that you had together. You want to immortalize everything that you two accomplished together. It all may be ending right now, but someday your accomplishments will be remembered.
I agree with Orange Duck, graduating high school was my first thought after hearing this song, but the thanks to everyone that helped out on her last album fits better.

One of my favourites from the new album for sure, it is so uplifting like enchanted.

I really like that interpretation. I didn't think of that at all but now that I read that it fits. :)

“This song is about my band and my producer and all the people who have helped build this brick by brick. The fans, the people who I feel are in it together. It talks about the triumphant moments that we’ve had in the last two years. I’ve had a lot of different kinds of moments in the past two years but there’s been a lot of triumphant ones where we just jump up and down and dance like we don’t care how we’re dancing and just scream at the top of our lungs ‘how’s this happening?’ and I feel very lucky to even have had one of those moments none the less all the ones that I got to have. I wrote a song about how I feel reflecting on it. This song for me is like looking at a photo album of all the award shows and all the stadium shows and all the hands in the air in the crowd. It’s sort of the first love song I’ve written to my team.” – Taylor Swift talking about Long Live
I just flat out love her!!((:

This reminds me of Change, too. I think it's one of the best in the album. The 'take this moment... tell them how I hope they shine' part always makes me cry!

Does anyone else think this part is about the vma's? Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this.....

@ lovewillconquerall,
I'm pretty sure that line is in reference to the Grammys, where Lady Gaga fans were outraged over the fact that Taylor "stole" the grammy from Gaga.

"'Cause for a moment a band of thieves in ripped up jeans got to rule the world" i love when she sings this line. gives me goosebumps everytime. also when she says "i had the time of my life, fighting dragons with you". i dunno but it reminds me of a song you would sing at the end of high school. i know thats not what its about but it just seems like that kind of song. deifinitely reminds me of change. :)
I agree one hundred percent!!
I agree one hundred percent!!
I know that she wrote this song for her band, but I interpet it differently.
"and bring on all the pretenders, I'm not afraid!!" When I listen to it I feel like it's a story about best friends growing up and facing reality together. "we were the kings and the queens" and "I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you" reminds me of the way kids use their imaginations.
"cuz for a moment a band of theives in ripped up jeans got to rule the world" that reminds me of them facing reality.
"but if god forbid fate should step in, and force us into a good bye, if u have children someday, when they point to the pictures, please tell them my name" this reminds me of my bestfriend, who is gonna move. It tells me how I don't want to be forgotten by her.
Lol yea it's kinda deep, but that's what the song makes me think of.
I think that in this song Taylor is talking about maybe the fist time she was at an awards show since she is talking about "and they read off our names" and " the crowds went wild" and then she wants her boyfriend to always remember her even if god for bid they split. She wants him to remember all the fun they had together.
I can't help but feel like this song might be about recalling the memory of senior year homecoming, with Taylor being homecoming queen of course
IMO the best song from Speak Now. mckennaaax3's interpretation is obviously correct.
