Talking cryptograms
you know as well as day
But keeping to themselves
the words they'll never say

Something you don't know
something I don't know
and they don't know

Shaping mirror eyes
that might as well be drawn
I'll be a stranger
by the time I'm up at dawn

Someone you won't know
someone I won't know
and they won't know

Don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so
don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so

Don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so
don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so

Watch you lose yourself
in momentary grace
It washes over you
then loses every trace

Not for you to keep
not for me to keep
nor them to keep

Empty daydream
that keeps playing on repeat
Each passing loop
more decayed less complete

And you don't weep
and I don't weep
they won't weep

Don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so
don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this’ll all seem fake so

Don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so
don't sleep
Won't be you when I'm awake so just
don't sleep
In the morning this'll all seem fake so

Step
Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
