You Lie Lyrics

It ain't complicated
Well, I've grown to hate it
I never liked the taste of crow but baby I ate it
They tried to warn me
They said that you were ornery
So don't bring me those big brown eyes and tell me that you're sorry
Well you might as well throw gasoline on a fire
The way you lie

You lie like a priceless Persian rug on a rich man's floor
You lie like a coon dog basking in the sunshine on my porch
You like like a penny in the parking lot at the grocery store
It just comes way too natural to you
The way you lie

That ain't my perfume
I bet she had a curfew
You told me you were out with the boys and baby I believed you
So why you lookin' so nervous
You know you're gonna deserve this
I oughta kill you right now and do the whole wide world a service
Well my daddy's gonna straighten you out like a piece of wire, like a piece of wire
The way you lie

You like like the man with the slick black hair who sold me that Ford
You like like a palm tree in the back yard after last month's storm
You like like a penny in the parking lot at the grocery store
It just comes way too natural to you
The way you lie

Well, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do
I'm gonna drive into the big ol' muddy river
I'm gonna park my car in the middle of the mile-long bridge
And then I'm gonna cry well maybe just a little
Then I'm gonna slip off the ring that you put on my finger
Give it a big ol' fling and watch it sink
Down, down, down
There it's gonna lie
Until the Lord comes back around

Because you lie like a priceless Persian rug on a rich man's floor
You lie like a coon dog basking in the sunshine on my porch
You like like a penny in the parking lot at the grocery store
It just comes so dang natural to you
The way you lie
The way you lie
Well it's what you do, it's who you are

i love the meaning of this song:) especially the first verse. some people may be confused by the line "i never liked the tast of crow but baby i ate it". When people used to say they would eat crow it meant admitting to a terrible mistake. so in this song its about her admitting to making a mistake by not listening to what everyone said about him.

this is my favorite song by them:) theyre from my hometown so its easy to relate :)

Thanks for readin!

Song Meaning

thanks for clarifying that about eating crow. i had no idea what that meant! the band perry is amazing and this song is one of my favorites. if i was her though, i would have sold the ring instead of tossing it.

Me too! I really had no idea! In real life, I would have sold the ring too, I guess, but it's very symbolic here. :)

Verse 1: This first verse is quite straight forward, were it not for "the taste of crow" that Courtney pointed out, is that she's admitting she made a mistake. (thanks!) And the line about "throwing gasoline at a fire", if you didn't know it, gasoline is highly ignitable and catches fire easily. So he's provoced her for a space of time, and that something he's recently done "pushed her over the edge". We also get to know that she was warned about his temper, and that when he does something wrong - as he obviously do regularly - he acts innocent or begs forgiveness.

Chourus: The first three lines are perhaps a bit difficult to understand at first, but in the fourth line she says "it just comes way too natural to you". Then we can see that she is comparing him to the other things in their "natural" environments, something that is comfortable there. She uses the word "lie" in two ways: to lie down, and to speak the opposite of truth. The chourus points out how comfortable this guy is when he's lying.

Verse 2: In the secound verse it is pointed out what it is that probably was the thing to finally make her snap. She smelled an other womans perfume on him, and is betting that she was very young, still living with her parents when she says "i bet she had a curfew". He said he was out with his friends, when he in reality was cheating on her with a teenager. Then the storyteller starts talking about revenge, and that the world would be a better place without him in it.

Verse 3: Here she says very straight forward what she is doing, ending the relationship by throwing his ring in the river, watching it sink. I think the ring might be symblolic for him,and that the river is her mind. It's muddy, so her deep subcontious. She pushes him into the back of her mind, and is never going to think about him again - "there it's gonna lie until the Lord comes back around." - he's gonna lay there forever.

Well, that's mine interpretation. What do you think? :)

My Interpretation

Clearly NOT what this innocent song is about, and YES; the world WOULD be a better place without him (i.e. sexual predators) in it!!! Kinda makes one wish to bring back "death by stoning" because I can assure you, I would happily spend all the rest of my days in prison for eleminating anyone who would violate/abuse/etc my own daughter...I'm sure there are many parents who would agree!

the lyrics of all their songs are magical

This song sounds great, and it's catchy, but... I can't get over the fact that most of the similes make it wrong. I mean, if you lie like a Persian rug, or a penny, or a dog, you're laying down... not speaking a falsehood. So that's really annoying. Catchy though.

that's what I thought at first as well but then she says "it just comes way too natural to you" like how all those items do those things naturally. his nature is telling lies. maybe she used those so that way when whoever she wrote it for hears it, they would hear "lie" the whole dang song so they'd be haunted by how much he lied and how hurt it obviously made her.. I don't know, just sayin' that's my opinion (:
