Jilted Lovers and Broken Hearts Lyrics
Is there anyone out there?
Somewhere I can belong
The city just ain't so kind tonight
I need a place to take refuge
See, I've been loving you blind
I guess I made it hard for me to find
That we were caught up
In the middle of a Worn out dream
I knew we were in trouble
When baby I almost screamed
When I saw you dancing
On the moon now
I watched him spin you round and round
Why did you roll your dice?
Show your cards?
Jilted lovers and broken hearts
You're flying away
While I'm stuck here on the ground
Is there anyone out there
Somewhere I can belong
Man, the city just ain't so kind tonight
And if I had my suspicions,
I kept them out of my heart.
Just wish I would have known right from the start
That she'd be speaking in riddles
And you're never coming back
You know I knew we were in trouble
But honey I almost cried
When I saw you dancing
On the moon now
I watched him spin you round and round
Why did you roll your dice?
Show your cards?
Jilted lovers and broken hearts
You're out on the wind
While I'm still waiting to be found
You did a fine job of hiding
That crooked ace up your sleeve
You doubled down my direction
You kissed me on the cheek and leave
I followed you through the darkness
I followed you through the cold
Woman I can tell you one thing
You're gonna wish you could go back and fold
Why did you roll your dice?
Show your cards?
Jilted lovers and broken hearts
You're flying away
While I'm stuck here on the ground
Why did you roll your dice?
Show your cards?
Jilted lovers and broken hearts
You're out on the wind
While I'm still waiting to be found
Well I will win
Only time will tell
You gotta suffer to remember how well
Our ideals never really marched in time
That's the bottom line
Jilted lovers and broken hearts
Somewhere I can belong
The city just ain't so kind tonight
See, I've been loving you blind
I guess I made it hard for me to find

This is probably my favorite song on the album AND probably the only song by Brandon or The Killers that I can find a very obvious meaning for.
I see it, basically, as a man being cheated on. "See, I've been loving you blind." He's been loving his wife without really seeing what's going on. "Caught up in the middle of a worn out dream." Their marriage is getting tiresome. "I knew we were in trouble, But baby I almost screamed when I saw you dancing..." He catches her cheating on him with another man. "Why did you roll your dice? Show your cards?" Why would she gamble what they have together? "Jilted lovers and broken hearts." Obvious. "You're gonna wish you could go back and fold." She's going to wish she could go back before she gambled with their relationship.
Etc, etc...The rest is easy to figure out.
I agree with everything you said. I feel that this is one of the easier songs to actually understand since he is more straightforward with they lyrics. I always wondered why he said "on the moon now" and after reading your post it's pretty obvious that he means she is just far away from him now.

I like this track after Only the Young and Crossfire. It definitely sounds like Killer-esque.
As for a meaning I think the title is kind of obvious. The possible end of a relationship and maybe the guy remembering the times they had good and bad, and he feels kinda bad about it.
I hear "that you'd be speaking in riddles and you'd never confide" and at the end he says "Will I ever win?" rather than well i will win
I'm rather sure that I'm correct on the last part. I compared the album version to a live performance and they sounded the same. You're right on the first part, though. Fixed.

listen again. it really does sound like "will I ever win?" and that makes sense being answered by "only time will tell."

Love this song, the lyrics are so true to heart for me. It's also very catchy and almost sounds like the Killers music. Some of the lyrics are wrong though...

Will I ever win Only time will tell You gotta suffer to remember how well Our ideals never really marched in time That's the bottom line Jilted lovers and broken hearts
This song makes me think of a guy i knew growing up, due to circumstances we never dated, but we did have feelings for each other. Apparently he thought we would get together when we got older, but i met someone in college and got married. Ten years later he is still single and blames me for not pursuing something with him. We come from different worlds, his family is wealthy, mine is blue collar, so i love the line, "our ideals never really marched in time, that's the bottom line." it sums up the feelings i had about us being out of sync and never really getting together.
I do agree it is probably more about cheating than unrequited love.
That's perhaps my favorite song in the Flamingo album.
