Ruling Me Lyrics

Ring ring goes your telephone
You act like you ain't at home
You shut me out, but it turns me on
Red lipstick, black dresses
A look that I should not mess with
It makes us boys go crazy for you

So fascinated
I'm anticipating the touch
That may never come

In the rain
In the sun
Everybody needs someone
They can dream of all night long
All the pain
And the ways
That you're driving me insane
It's no mystery why you're ruling me

We first met in the lunch room
My ocular nerve went, *POP* *ZOOM*
I never observed such a beautiful face
Sweet lady, don't play me
If I am a knob, don't fade me
You can't win the game if you pass the Ace

I'm so frustrated
This love's belated, methinks
Let's get it to go

In the rain
In the sun
Everybody needs someone
They can dream of all night long
All the pain
And the ways
That you're driving me insane
It's no mystery why you're ruling me

I'm not kidding anymore
This love hurts, that's for sure
I feel you, I see you,
I need you

In the rain
In the sun
Everybody needs someone
They can dream of all night long
All the pain
And the ways
That you're driving me insane
It's no mystery why you're ruling me
It's no mystery why you're ruling me

One of the best off Hurley in my opinion right now. Everyone needs someone no matter what the situation is what i'm getting.

My Interpretation

This song definitely grew on my since I first heard it. The chorus is very happy-sounding about daydreaming of someone. Life is better when you have a love interest to think about all day and night. The verses are more serious though, and progress throughout the song. The first verse narrates going after a girl who is playing hard to get, but he likes it and he's just having fun. The second verse shows signs of serious emotion, even pleading with the girl not to "play" him, despite initially wanting to "play" the girl. With the bridge, the narrative turns even further as Rivers belts out that he isn't kidding anymore like he was in verse 1. The narrator goes from lightheartedly daydreaming about "a touch that may never come" to actually needing the girl. It kinda perfectly describes my relationship with my latest ex.
