[Verse 1]
Every morning, every day
I am hoping for the chance to get away
In the evening, every night
I am dreaming of a chance to make it right
Every chance that I get
I am placing a bet
On the sun in the sky

[Chorus]
And if you take this away from me
I'll never forgive you, can't you see?
Our life will be broken
Our hate will be unspoken

[Verse 2]
I can feel those metal chains
And they're holding back the hope that keeps me sane
I can fight back, yes I can!
Because I'm strong enough to show you I'm a man
And I hate what you do
When your poison seeps through
And you're laughing at me

[Chorus]
And if you take this away from me
I'll never forgive you, can't you see?
Our life will be broken
Our hate will be unspoken

[Verse 3]
Every chance that I get
I am placing a bet
On the sun in the sky
As it sets out of sight
And I hate what you do
When your poison seeps through
And you're laughing at me

[Chorus]
And if you take this away from me
I'll never forgive you, can't you see?
Our life will be broken
Our hate will be unspoken
And if you take this away from me
I'll never forgive you, can't you see?
Our life will be broken
Our hate will be unspoken

To me, this song is all about other people in your life who are trying to bring you or others down, for whatever reason.

It's no secret everyone, but human beings treat others like crap everyday. I see it all the time, and it hurts me. What hurts me even more is when I catch myself doing it, and I realize the damage I've inflicted on someone. I try my best to treat people the way they want to be treated, not the way the deserve to be treated.

When I listen to this song, it reminds me of that personal vow of mine. Rivers tells us in this song exactly that-- He's not going to let that person/those people take him down to their level. He's going to be there and he's going to be strong, and if that conviction were to ever be taken from him, he would delve into the same hate he wishes man to be free of.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
