Down Lyrics

You would have loved who I used to be
Yesterday, I would have hated the boy you see
When you found me I was at my worst
The best I was is a long forgotten curse

You caught me on the way down
Please hold my hand before I drown
Tie my hands before I burn this town
You caught me on the way down

Feel like a shell of yester-years gone by
Bad decisions like ghosts that just won't die
I'm so sorry that I can't apologize
For what comes next is another long goodbye

You caught me on the way down
Honey, honey
Please hold my hand before I drown
Tie my hands before I burn this town
You caught me on the way down

You caught me on the way down
Oh, honey
Please hold my hand before I drown
Tie my hands before I burn this town
You caught me on the way down

"I feel like I was a better follower of Christ yesterday, so much of this world just collapses and I felt weighted underneath past decisions. I know it is not necessarily true, but while writing this song thats where I was.

This simple song was perhaps the most autobiographical I had written in years. I see now that we are not our past. I guess I always knew it in the back of my head but it took someone outside myself to show me that it was true.

'Honey, honey' lyric and melody line was stolen from a Lonely Hearts song." - Stephen Christian anberlinlyrics.tumblr.com June 2014

Song Meaning

In an interview with Relevant Magazine, Stephen said this song was "about how I felt like I was a better Christian long ago than I am now. But still there is Someone out there that’s going to catch you and keep you from falling, and that’s kind of what the record was for me."

Also, when asked what song was most meaningful to him on the new album, he answered "For me, “Down” is the most meaningful. “Down” is the one that I go back to. [It’s] like heart-on-the-sleeve, just absolutely baring all that’s left of my soul onto a tape, and then put out on a CD."

Great song!

One of my favorite songs from "Dark is the Way". The guitar work is understated and pleasing; i especially love the intro which gives off a bit of a "western" vibe.

The songwriting evokes a lot of what Stephen does best- he shows brutal and genuine honesty about tough parts of life in a beautiful and poetic way. My favorite line is "I'm so sorry that I can't apologize". He's not apologizing for not apologizing, he's apologizing because he CAN'T apologize for what hes done. I also like how he refers to himself as a "boy"- very vulnerable and heart-on-you-sleeve. The only part I don't like about this song is "Honey, honey" which doesn't really seem to fit with the song and really throws things off when its meaning is about him and God.

The "You" in the song could be a girl and it could still be about his relationship with God. Meaning, he's apologizing to her because he's not in the spiritually healthy place he'd like to be in order to have a good relationship with her. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

Please tell me someone else noticed the glaring similarity between this song and "The Unwinding Cable Car".
