i think this is about wanting someone that is so perfect for you, but them not wanting you back. "how long should anyone wait to be believed?" how long should you have to convince someone that you are right for them? then arguing with yourself about doing so... "where did my body go, where did i leave it?"
just a guess... plus, the vulnerability in her voice juxtaposed by the passion later on in the choruses matched by the crescendo of the instruments really makes that meaning believable to me.
I think this song is about being in love with someone who is in love with another woman who at the time may have been unattainable to him("she was your splitting light, she was your deafening, she was your dream). So, in the mean time he "settles" for a life with her and then, when the other woman becomes a reality for him, he leaves and tries to make her feel crazy for loving him so much "you say we gave our hands too soon, but darling what made my life was you". Sounds like she is confused about why he had such a sudden change of heart but also understands that the one he is with is the one he wanted most. She feels like a consolation prize. or something like that....
