Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Well, considering the fact that Brandon is openly Mormon, I don't understand how you could expect his music not to have religious themes. I would go so far as to say that at least half of the songs he's written have have at least a little bit of an undertone to them.
That said, I'm not sure how you could be a fan of The Killers if you don't like a song because it deals with religion. It's kind of childish to dislike a very good song for that. Spirituality is something we struggle with as humans, and Brandon does so in song (quite beautifully, I might add). To discount that entire aspect of life and existence is to say that so much music, art, and literature should be discounted for its religious themes.
