First of all, I am an atheist… what I don’t understand why people have to turn everything into a religious battle. I am also a writer and an English major…. I am not showing off that I am educated or that I know more than anyone. I have done explication to poetry and writing. I explicated the entire song. Yes the song does allude to God, Holy Ghost, etc. But the main point of the song is that she had her heart broken and is looking for peace at a church. PLEASE if you have negative comments keep them to yourself. Frankly I don’t give s**t! This is simply my humble option… truth be told only Vanessa Carlton can say since she wrote the song. =)
P.S. I only wrote because I hate when people talk bad about Vanessa Carlton

Madness, madness of the heart (the weary heart… this represent LOVE) But you knew it, you knew it from the start (trusting on someone that u know will break your heart)
And Hawking will tell us no tall tales this spring (hunting/looking for answers to life on tales… this could be biblical) Our minds hold the chaos that stared everything (our doubts are what cases chaos in relationships or faith ) Maybe it's fate, as the sadness takes hold (broken hearted) Sill stars through the window, will ever know this (will she know if he was the one soul mate)

There's a madness, a madness in the stars (weary about religion if there is a heaven.. why can’t see find peace. And why did the break her heart) But you knew it, we knew it from the start (knows this is the end of relationship)
This may be the most elegant and sincere pro-atheism song I have ever heard. Think about it.

She's saying the religion and faith in things we don't understand are total madness and loss of reason and people are looking to science and logic for answers. She goes on to talk about how "Hawking will tell us no tall tales this spring." In contrast to various faith that have stories to explain everything. It makes more sense if you consider that when asked about her beliefs, she talks about how she's an atheist but Stephen Hawking's work and ideas means a lot to her.
Anyway, regardless of whether or not anyone agrees with that, that's what I see in it and I think it's a beautiful song.

I agree with the last comment on two things: 1. It is about the "madness" of religion and 2. It is elegant. However it is hard for me to listen to this song because in every line she is insulting me. It's a beautiful back handed slap. I love her music, I have for a long time, but it's hard to promote someone who just released a song that is basically calling you crazy.
