In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Stand up straight
Do your trick, turn on the stars
Jupiter shines so bright when you're around
They tell us slow down
We're too young, you need to grow
Well speed's the key,
And they don't know who we are
Who's to say we're not good enough
Who's to say that this is not our love
Mother, don't tell me friends are the ones that I lose
cause they'd bleed before you
Sometimes family are the ones you choose
It's too late now, I hold on to this life I've found
Who's to say we won't burn it out
Who's to say we won't sink in doubt
Who's to say we won't fade to grey
Who are they anyway, they don't know
And you say we're too young
But maybe you're too old to remember
And I try to pretend but I just feel it when we're together
And if you don't believe me you never really knew us
You never really knew
You and I packing up my room
We feel alright
But we're not welcome, soon we'll be driving
Cause they don't know who we are
Who's to say we won't stay together
Who's to say we aren't getting stronger
Who's to say I can't live without you
Who are they anyway, they don't know
And you say we're too young
But maybe you're too old to remember
And I try to pretend but I just feel it when we're together
Who's to say, who's to say
Who are they anyway
Stand up boy, I shine so bright when you're around.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I think all the songs on this album are beautiful, but especially this one.
I think it's mainly about a relationship that isn't accepted by others but to the people in the relationship, they're really in love and they don't understand why everyone is so negative towards them and is trying to pry them apart. Everyone thinks they aren't mature enough to handle this kind of love, but as Vanessa says, Who's to say we won't stay together. This also seems applicable to long distance relationships.
I think she's trying to say that if you really love someone, it doesn't matter about the age or anything else, as long as you are in love and have that special person who helps you "shine".
Overall, it's a very uplifting song. LUV IT!
i think its beautiful especially the chorus
in my opinion vanessa isnt only saying that as long as two people love each other it doesnt matter what others say. rather, i feel that it is saying others have no say about others relationships "who's to say we won't burn it out? who's to say we won't sink in doubt? who's to say we won't fade today? who are they anyway, they don't know"

That last line just gets me....so beautiful...
"Stand up boy, I shine so bright when you're around."

I really do love both of her albums, especially the second one. And this song...just magnificent. It's like, what do they know about our love? If they don't realize how much we love each other, then they don't know anything about us because this is our world. It talks about how "and you say we're too young but maybe you're too old to remember..". So true. People can forget how strong love can be, they can forget that even young people can fall deeply in love...and even if it won't last, they should just let it be, because it's beautiful for the time being, and kids need to learn to make their own mistakes. <sorry that is a huggge run-on sentence.
This song is one of my favorites. It's pretty.
