Empty Room Lyrics
Said your name in an empty room
Said your name in an empty room
Something I would never do
Said your name in an empty room
Said your name in an empty room
Something I would never do
I'm alone again
When I'm by myself
I can be myself
And my life is coming
But I don't know when
You were burning now you're black and gray
You were burning now you're black and gray
Something I would never say
I'm alone again
When I'm by myself
I can be myself
And my life is coming
But I don't know when
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Moi j'attends, toi tu pars
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Moi j'attends, toi tu pars
Said your name in an empty room
Something I would never do
Said your name in an empty room
Something I would never do
I can be myself
And my life is coming
But I don't know when
You were burning now you're black and gray
Something I would never say
I can be myself
And my life is coming
But I don't know when
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Moi j'attends, toi tu pars
Toute ma vie, est avec toi
Moi j'attends, toi tu pars

I'll be happy to provide an accurate translation for the French part of this song since Arcade Fire is clearly and undeniably one one the greatest bands of our time and they're from my part of the world. Also, you can trust me, French is my mother tongue.
All my life, is with you. All my life, is with you Me I wait, You you go
I would also like to add that I just saw them live at the Festival d'été de Québec and it was extraordinaire! Their performance was better than Rush's, and that's saying something.
isolation and loneliness. difficulty dealing with expression. losing hope.
sad song.
The way I see this song, it seems to be about an independent person who has fallen in love.
They likely had a relationship- good or bad- but then it ended, and then they were forced to acknowledge the fact that some part of them still hung on to those feelings, that person, those memories. They're saying their name in an empty room, where no one else can hear the fact that they haven't completely moved on yet.
Usually, I'd say that the person in question would project themselves as a independent, strong person that's more or less alright no matter what they go through in life, hence "something I would never do." Saying their name, admitting even to themselves that they aren't as indestructible as they might have thought and that their heart is still aching... those are things that they can only do when they're 'by themselves' in an empty room. They know their 'life is coming,' they know they'll be alright eventually, but for this moment they've allowed a weakness.
I like your interpretation! This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Sad lyrics, but hopeful...good energy in the music.

I love this part...it's so true. I think it's something some people would tell themselves: be patient, you'll heal, don't run off to someone else and don't pine too much after this old relationship. With time all things will mend, but for now it's ok to feel lonely and upset. It's hard to know who you...

The french part translation is : I will spend my entire life with you I will spend my entire life with you I'm waiting, you're leaving
I will spend my entire life with you I will spend my entire life with you I'm waiting, you're leaving
A literal translation is wrong, only the meaning matters! A french guy
To me this song makes me think of my best friend who passed away last June.
The feelings of loneliness "Said your name in an empty room Something I would never do."
She was cremated.
"you were burning, now you're black and grey. Something I would never say."
It's a very sad song, yet I love it so much.
@Sheet My ex-boyfriend and first love committed suicide and this song reminds me of him for the same reasons, esp the cremation part. So fucking sad.

how absolutely fucking miserable.
Why miserable?
Why miserable?
Why not? You're stuck in this room in which you wait and wait for the reason you might need to break out of your door, did you ever found yourself tied onto your bed, your windows are dark and your door is locked? If you did, you know that that is when your thoughts transform into their strangest ways and all you see is where you could be- if you just dared to move outside your room. And on top, you're in love and it's heartbreaking when it's in another part of the continent, it's not like you will ever...

The official lyrics given with the CD are:
Said your name, in an empty room. Said your name, in an empty room. Something I would never do.
Said your name, in an empty room. Said your name, in an empty room. Something I would never do.
I'm alone again.
When I'm by myself, I can be myself, And my life is coming but I don't know when.
You were burning now you're black and grey. You were burning now you're black and grey. Something I would never say.

I love how the most depressing songs that Arcade Fire have, they have the most upbeat tempos
This is the first lyric site I've come across that actually has the last verses right whereas all the other websites don't even have correct French grammar
Every time I listen to the album, another song catches my ear. This time, 'Empty Room' caught me by surprise. The sounds of the instruments and voices are very eerie. It's like when you have so many thoughts running through your mind and it puts you in a haze.
What is the correct translation of the French sung at the end of the song?
According to Google Translation
According to Google Translation
Toute ma vie, est avec toi. - All my life is with you.
Toute ma vie, est avec toi. - All my life is with you.
Moi J'attends, toi tu pars. - I am waiting, you leave yourself.
Moi J'attends, toi tu pars. - I am waiting, you leave yourself.
Now if you just look at this it means nothing, but it fits with the song. I know that it's the for real translation in the fact that it makes no sense as a sentance. But it gives you the "jist" of the translation
