Answer to Yourself Lyrics

You gotta answer to yourself
You can't depend on anyone else
You gotta know where you stand
And what's in your hands
Yeah, you gotta answer to yourself
You gotta write down what you know
You gotta make sure that it's known
Because they're coming along to see what you've done
And they're gonna claim it for their own
You got a rabbit in your hat
You got a few tricks up your sleeve
Don't get stuck in a rut
Or stuck in the same
You got exactly what you need
You got a talent, don't you know?
You're more talented than you know
And you give it a shot
And give it the time
And be surprised how far it goes
But I think I'm gonna die
Before I see my time
But I think I'm gonna die
Trying anyway
You gotta answer to yourself
Two days a week outside yourself
You take an hour a day, an hour a day
And you don't respond to anyone else
You got a few things on your shelf
You got to look through for yourself
You gotta choose what to read
Choose what to believe
And you don't take it from anyone else
But I think I'm gonna die
Before I see my time
But I think I'm gonna die
Trying anyway

It's interesting how there isn't anyone giving their interpretation on the song. The meaning is/seems very clear; "You got to answer to yourself, you can't depend on anyone else", with a little tip "You got to write down what you know". Couldn't be more clear, no? The Soft Pack is trying to encourage people to do their best in life, etc.

Still, somehow, I usually dislike songs like these. I often even detest songs that try to make you feel better (like a lot of pop-songs do these days). It just feels like they are lying to me, because humanity is imperfect.

Still, I always loved listening to this song. I wondered why, since it doesn't encourage me to do anything either. Last night when I was singing it I realized that I didn't put myself as the listener I am, but I put myself in the shoes of the singer.

When I listen to music, let's say Nirvana singing "I'm so ugly, but that's okay" (Lithium), I put myself in the spot of the singer. I know I like to help people that need to be encouraged (spend enough time on dA, haha), and I know I will never hit it big time myself, since I am just not talented.

I don't really know what the singer is getting at with "I think I'm gonna die, before I see my time", but to me it doesn't matter if it's genuine or just sung because it sounds good; I feel it. It feels right.

So here I was wondering whether other people look at this song from the singer's perspective too, and whether people actually gone through live changing action because of this song. It is definitely powerful enough.

TL;DR, what are you doing on this page? I know it's a wall of text but it's all there is here right now. Shut up ;p

My Interpretation

Hello everyone! First time writing on this site which by the way I love and it's been very useful to me. Please, bear with me if my english isn't perfect it's just my third language.

That said, here it is my interpretation: I totally agree with Maplestrip about the fact that this seems to be an "encouraging song", but personally I think that this song maybe tells us something about the story of the band and how they felt and at the same time they manage to encourage who is facing the same problems and thinks he/she will never be successful but they do it sharing their own experience, sort of a "I feel you, bro/sis, I've been through the same, even if you don't see the results after all your efforts don't give up, just keep trying. It worked for me, that's all I can say. Hope it will work out for you too".

As for the lyrics, to me it's like he, the author/singer, is talking to himself. He tries to convince himself that he got a talent and "something" to show the world but he actually is very insecure about it so he does a sort of encouraging speech to himself. But he can't really believe it, so for me the verses "But I think I'm gonna die before I see my time" are referring to this, to the fact that he's frustrated that his talent seems to be ignored or not recognized by anyone (except for us who like to listen to this song and talk about it ;P) so he thinks he wil never see his dreams fulfilled.
