After You Lyrics

On the last night on earth when the horses run free
The scriptures foretell of a party in Hackney
In a dimly lit room crammed with loathing and hate
They’re selling their souls and I just can’t wait

I shrivel inside at the sight of your beauty
I fall to the floor as she’s shaking her booty
The rain makes me shiver; the wind turns me blue
Oh – the things we get up to, to get through the night after you

I knew it was wrong; I began to suspect
When she reached over and pressed the eject
I was up to the gunnels against your advice
I felt so ashamed that I did it twice

From disco to disco; from Safeway to Tesco
We’re shopping around from the cradle til death row
From Tesco it’s down to the 7-11
To chase through the night time, to chase through the night after you
After you

I can’t explain why I need to be free
But if you need to be naked that’s alright by me
It’s the fast track express to the graveyard, I know
So what are you waiting for? Hey ho, let’s go

From disco to disco; from Safeway to tesco
We’re shopping around from the cradle til death row
Don’t stop til the train has pulled into the station
I’ll hold the door for you – no, I insist, after you
After you
After you

No comments? Surprisingly really loved this song when I first heard it.

I adore this song! They gave it out for free to people after a gig before they put it up for normal purchase.

I think in very basic terms it's about going to a party and meeting a woman and getting very out of your depth and comfort zone. Realising and accepting that most of what you're doing is perhaps wrong and certainly out of character for you (the "room crammed with loathing and hate") but you're doing it anyway because you're caught up in it.

On a side note I like how Jarvis hasn't become a Waitrose kinda guy

As I've posted before, I do really love this song (and most everything Pulp)...

If I ever run for elected office, which is a possibility these days, if I could get permission, I'd use this song at rallies, possibly along with Midnight Radio from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (again, if permission is possible) and use o/' I felt so ashamed / that I did it twice o/' as one of many campaign slogans... as you can imagine I wouldn't have an (R) after my name on the ballot... would I get your vote?

o/' I can't explain why I need to be free / but if you need to be naked that's alright by me o/'

The second line of that would also make a great campaign slogan...

"If you need to be naked that's alright by me!! Vote gren 2018"

@gren - turns out permission is not needed for songs played at rallies (tho bands do have the right to ask you not to use it), just a fee to ASCAP or BMI is all that’s needed... music used for political ads on t’other hand does require permission.
