If Not For Ourselves Lyrics

And I think you've just about lost,
Your sense of self,
Your sense of self.
And your foundations
Are crumbling down,
And are crumbling down.

I told you so, told you so.
Don't be the one to say you know what's right.
I told you so, told you so.
Don't be the one to say you know my heart.

Don't you be torn from your roots,
You won't live in this pursuit
You won't survive above this ground
It won't be long until you're homebound.

Stop pretending!
Drawing the lines, you're not concerned about me,
I'm losing confidence.
Why do you show no mercy?

Stop pretending!
Drawing the lines, you're not concerned about me.
I'm losing confidence,
Why do you show no mercy?

These branches are burning,
These branches won't pull me down.
Back to the ground, where I am standing
Safe and sound.

Who are you (Who are you),
To tell us who we are? (Who we are)
Who are you (Who are you),
To tell us who we are? (Who we are?)

Who are you?
You're a fiend, you're a liar;
And I will summon the hands of a fighter,
And you will know, you will know who we are.

Who are you?
You're a fiend, you're a liar;
And I will summon the hands of a fighter,
And you will know, and you will know.

Who are you?
You're a fiend, you're a liar;
And I will summon the hands of a fighter,
And you will know, you will know who we are.

Who are you?
You're a fiend, you're a liar;
And I will summon the hands of a fighter,
And you will know, you will know.

You say you know who I am.
You'll only bring me down.
(You'll only bring me)
Bring me down.
You left me cold at home
(You left me...)
To find the foundation
(To find the foundation, the walls are crumbling down.)
The walls are crumbling down.

You say you know who I am.
You'll only bring me down.
(You'll only bring me)
Bring me down.
(You left me...)
To find the foundation,
(To find a foundation, and the walls are crumbling down.)
And the walls are crumbling down.
Are crumbling down,
They're crumbling.

I'm really not sure what the song is about...but I'll give my only theory since there haven't been any other posts describing their ideas. The best I can come up with is this song might be talking about the music industry. "losing your sense of self" could be criticizing the industry for the music they are putting out that don't have the emotion and soul that other bands do. Example, you get artists who don't write their own material, who use auto-tune not just to add effects but to fix their vocals to sound better...then you have raw musicians who built themselves up from nothing and made themselves something. "Who are you, to tell us who we are? Who are you, you're a fiend, you're a liar And I will summon the hands of a fighter And you will know, who we are" Could be talking about failed attempts at getting signed, people telling them they don't have a sound that'll sell, etc..and they counter with that they won't give up until their material is heard.

I don't know, I could be TOTALLY off. It's just my interpretation. :) Thoughts, ideas, comments?

I think this song is about a girl being broken up with, and without the boy, she has “just about lost [her] sense of self.” The boy wants to leave, but the girl doesn’t. The girl is so dependent on him, but she won’t let him trick her. She knows that he doesn’t care, even though he acts as if he does… “Stop pretending, Drawing the lines you're not concerned about me." The boy thinks he knows what she feels, but he doesn't. The boy has "left [her] cold at home."

I personally believe that this is a family issue between artist and so called "supportive family members." Of course, I could be very wrong. This verse, "These branches are burning, These branches won't pull me down. Back to the ground, where I am standing, Safe and sound." makes me feel as if it is a family problem. Maybe judgment. I feel that Woe, Is Me, is simply trying to convey that they pretty much won't be tamed by conformity or family expectations. As I said, I could be wrong.

This song is pretty complex The whole album seems to be versed by a kid who is braking away from his family, specifically his father, The first portion of the song is written from the perspective of the father. Basically a "you need us"/"you're nothing without me" The second half is from the son. Basically he is just saying "you're wrong, you'll know my name when I'm done"

Basically, the moral is, forget your family or the things that are tying you down, follow your dreams
