I think this song is about going through something really hard in you life, and not being sure if you can make it through it. But then realizing that feeling pain is better than feeling nothing, because pain means that you're still alive. And alot of times pain makes you stronger, and when you get through the really hard things in life, it makes you appreciate all the things that you took for granted before.
I love when people say this because it is so naiive. unfortunately for most people "pain makes you feel alive" but for others it is too much to live with.
