Damn you twilight!
Actually, in an interview they said they didn't write it FOR the movie. They wrote it to be the closing track on Sea of Cowards, but the production people of Eclipse wanted the track exclusively, so they quickly recorded another song to end the album (Old Mary).
I've been a Dead Weather fan for quite some time. I'm thrilled that this song is putting them out there for more people to discover, but I think this song is less about the words, and more about the ambiance and the feel. If you look at both this song and Old Mary, they have the same, low-key, quiet feel. I think it was just the feeling they wanted to end their album. It just also so happened to be perfect for a moment in Eclipse. So while I'm sure the words mean something to them, I really think it's more of a big-picture song (as in look at the whole thing, not just the words).
I love this song and this band! I don't really know the meaning but I'm starting to think that it is about acting like someone you are not. Like someone's personality changing. The lines that especially make me think this are: "and the days will come and go and the band will march along 'til the day you cast a shadow that looks nothing like your own" because its basically saying, life will go on until the day you become someone that you are not.
i dont know though because those are basically the only lines i get. haha, this is my first comment on here so if i should stupid cut me some slack please. :D hahhaha.
i hate twilight but i love the dead weather... not there best song but i like it.
I love this band to pieces but good god this song is terrible. The lyrics are weak, the rhymes are childish at best, and the instruments sound lifeless & bored. I'm glad they left it off of Sea Of Cowards.
I have no clue on the subject of the deeper meaning of this song, but I felt the need to write this to defend it. This song is AMAZING! I don't know what it is, but it sends chills down my spine. And sorry to all the Twilight haters out there- but I heard it on the Eclipse soundtrack and during the movie I was like "OH MY GOD this is a perfect song for the bad vampires <3" So I give this song five stars.
yeah i understand but if you listened to there other stuff, its alot weaker than all of the other stuff that they've done. i think they just got offered to do a song for twilight and just wrote it really fast to get it over with.

Meh the original Twilight movie was awful, New Moon was good, Eclipse is fine, no need to hate on the entire franchise. But I think the song goes well with it. I think sweetness1901 has it right in terms of the movie and book, and that it is about you changing as life goes on until you realise you don't know yourself so well anymore.

I'm sorry I haven't checked songmeanings for so long! But I'm in no way a twihard, I read the books and I've seen the movies, but I'm not crazy about it. I agree though; I think it's just because many twilight fans are young, and it's 'uncool' for them to like bands like The Dead Weather, so they don't bother to investigate it, and music in general, The Dead Weather isn't shoved down their throats like Justin Bieber, and they don't explore it themselves, so it passes by without notice. Jack White is what music is actually about, it's like...

I just thought of another interpretation, but I didn't know it wasn't recorded for the movie; it doesn't really matter because it fits the movie, which is probably why twilight wanted it. The full moon reference seems like a Jacob thing. But whatever XD
First of all - I do not know the Twilight movies, so I'm free of any connections to this.
The song seems to me like talking about doing something for a very long time ("and the days will come and go/and the band will march along"), perhaps some kind of job or something, you really don't like or that doesn't fit your personality, until it actually changes you into something you weren't before and perhaps never wanted to be.
"The road is always clear." The characters have a stable life (school, jobs, or careers).
"The moon is always full for us." The characters are in a stable relationship (engaged, married, or living together).
"I was raised up like a snake. You were raised to leave me bait that I always take." The narrator (singer) can't resist the other character (let's call him/her "character B") no matter how much that person changes.
"One is born so one can die... The days will come and go." The narrator explains that the good days make up for the bad days, and that when a bad thing happens (ex. a death) a good thing also happens (ex. a birth).
"You must wait a really long time. That's more than you can bare." Character B finds his/her life very tedious and uneventful.
"One is born so one can die... The band will march along." Character B thinks of his/her life as a funeral procession.
"'Til the day you cast a shadow that looks nothing like your own... That's not what you want to hear." Character B feels like what has died has been the person he/she once was. Maybe he/she had higher aspirations. Maybe he/she wanted to be the complete opposite of what he/she is now in terms of life goals and/or personality.
"Rolling in on a burning tire, you're gonna set my house on fire, just to show me you were there." Character B is willing to throw away everything he/she has (at the expense of the narrator), just because he/she feels as if he/she is someone he/she is not supposed to be.
While this song wasn't written for Twilight: Eclipse, it's played when Riley and Victoria kiss. I imagine it's played there because Victoria wishes she were with James and is willing to do anything it takes to either exact revenge or be with him in the afterlife. That would make Victoria character B in the song.
