It Is Not Meant to Be Lyrics

I wanted her
I wanted her,
But she doesn't like the life that I lead
She doesn't like the life that I lead
Doesn't like sand stuck on her feet
Or sitting around, smoking weed
I must seem more like a friend in need

And I boast that it is meant to be but in all honesty,
I don't have a hope in hell
I'm happy just to watch her move
And in all honesty, I don't have a hope in hell
I'm happy just to watch her move

She doesn't like the friends that I make
Doesn't make friends for friendship's sake
She just gets bored sitting by the lake
Her soul won't surface and her heart won't ache

And I boast that it is meant to be but in all honesty,
I don't have a hope in hell
I'm happy just to watch her move
And in all honesty, I don't have a hope in hell
I'm happy just to watch her move

And I thought they could cure his disease
But in all honesty, he didn't have a hope in hell
Now we'll never see him move

I'm really surprised by how straightforward these lyrics are.

It's just about a guy liking a girl that he is completely incompatible with. He lives a total slacker lifestyle, somking pot and going to the beach, of which she disapproves. She also "doesn't make friends for freindship's sake", which just means she isn't very friendly. He wishfully hopes that it will work out between them, mainly because he very attracted to her, probably sexually. He knows that it isn't going to work between them, but for the moment he's "happy just to watch her move."

This is all sort of weird because I'm sort of in this same situation myself, and I'm stoned as well... sorta strange...

Now, with that last part at the end, it sort of gets confusing. It seems to be completely unrelated from the rest of the song, only borrowing the form of the chorus. The lyrics could be taken literally, being about a hopeless illness someone is suffering. There is no real clue as to who is sick though, maybe just a different friend. I'm not really sure about that part.

I think that part's completely different from the main lyrics. Yeah, it could be about a friend who's sick and possibly died or paralysed. That inclusion of an unrelated lyric reminds me of Time by Pink Floyd towards the ending.

the last paragraph isnt about a person with a real illness. The end is the from perspective of his girlfriend. His girlfriend sees his slacker qualities as a "disease." She doesnt understand why he doesnt do anything, so it shows just how both of them don't understand one another.

I agree with every word you said connor11!!!

About the last bit: I get the feeling that he's talking about himself in third person; someone who 'doesn't have a hope'; 'thought they could cure his disease' - maybe his friends were trying to help him stop thinking about this girl, but he can't help wanting her even though he knows it won't work out.

Great song, up there with Tame Impala's best. As for the confusion on the last verse: Kevin Parker's father died from cancer just months before Innerspeaker was released. Much like the narrator realizing his relationship has been doomed from the start, he reflects that his father was doomed from first diagnosis.

slight variation: "her soul won't suffer so her heart won't ache"

I can't decide what happens at the end either... I think yes he is talking about himself in the third person, and maybe he has eventually gotten with the girl and she has taken over his life and his friends never see him any more (as often happens).
