The Dead Dog Lyrics
yeah these people have it made
they got all the money,
everything
they know it all so they got nothing else to know
forget it all when they fly back from mexico
like the wolves that had it made
they got food for years mountains for days
up the mountain gotta find what the sheep had found
back to the den they
find that the cubs had drowned
so why would we try if we can wait
just have ourselves a time
free like the mind
it always waits
for friends to come around
so they'll get high and higher still
and slowly fall behind
the warmth it came in waves of pain
we had ourselves a time
yeah we had ourselves a time if
you find me at the dead dog
boy i gotta warn you
these people they,
they didn't try
they didn't try
and they lie the lie they lie
still born still taking shape
it took ten of them ten years ten times what it takes
forget it all
just shove all the poor in there
the hungry men swallowed all we fit in there
so why would we try if we can wait
just have ourselves a time
free like the mind
it always waits
for friends to come around
so they'll get high and higher still
and slowly fall behind
the warmth it came in waves of pain
we had ourselves a time
yeah we had ourselves a time
you find me at the dead dog
boy i gotta warn you
these people they, they didn't try
they didn't try
and they lie the lie they lie
they got all the money,

they know it all so they got nothing else to know
forget it all when they fly back from mexico
like the wolves that had it made

does anybody else think this has anything to do with the dead dog ranch from Twin Peaks?
I have no idea what this song is about, but if I had to interpret it, it might be a commentary on the struggle of the middle class to feel like celebrities, like the people who have it made and barely had to try, and then lie about what a wonderful life it is to be that way, when in reality life at 'The Dead Dog' is empty. Despite having 'food for years' if they live a different way, the middle class are on this eternal struggle taking them 'ten times what it takes' to pay for the lifestyle, fly to mexico to see what the mountains had to offer, only to come back and find everything worse than before (drowned cubs). Why would they try to break out of the system if they can numb the pain in small doses by 'having themselves a time' every weekend, getting drunk, high, etc. The warmth of brief respite comes in 'waves of pain' from of toiling away.
I believe this song is about a bar called "The Dead Dog" and it's patrons (possibly of the lower class "...just shove all the poor in there"). Why would they try at anything if they can wait around having a good time (drinking with friends and such)?
The Dead Dog (also known at times as the Borealis Beach Club) was a strip club/dive bar/liquor store along the Parks Hwy in Wasilla, AK where several of the members of the band grew up. It was positioned in an area with little police activity and lots of drug activity. Some locals always wondered what went on behind those walls but most were kind of afraid to find out due to it's less than stellar reputation. As most things go, the Dead Dog was a fine establishment which in fact was visited by people of all socioeconomic levels.
