This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.

Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
Encouraging someone to go out and have the time of their life. That person means a lot to the narrator (you're a gold mine) and they want the "valkyrie" to have some fun and not to leave until the lights go up. Pretty straightforward apart from the weird title.
But you don't hear the word "Valkyrie" come up all that often, and it has a very specific meaning -- one of twelve maidens that accompanied souls of warriors to Valhalla. So there's some overtone of death -- if not of a person, then of something -- a relationship, time with a person, etc. So the singers are pleading with the Valkyrie not to go back home, because when she does, whatever it is goes with her and is over.<br /> <br /> But I think part of the story of the song -- if you'll excuse me for getting this heavy -- might actually be in the story of the most famous of Valkyrie of all time -- Brunnhilde, from Wagner's ring cycle. (The one usually portrayed as a fat woman wearing a hat with horns on her head.) The cycle -- four operas in total -- circles around mythological Gold in the Rhine river, which can be made into a magic Ring that will let its bearer rule the world -- but only by someone who first renounces love. (Hence the stuff about "you're a gold mine" -- as in, you don't need the river gold.) The opera cycle goes through everything -- questioning faith in the gods, potential end of heaven and earth...Wagner didn't mess around. But in the second opera of the cycle, Brunnhilde is sent down from Valhalla, ordered by the Wotan, the leader of the gods, to take Sieglinde away from Siegmund (both his human kids...read the wikipedia summary). But Brunnhilde's too moved their love to do it -- and ends up losing her divinity and being sent to live in a ring of fire for it (kind of like a roller disco ring, maybe, in a whimsically modern view). <br /> <br /> However, I looked online, and there also appears to be a drag queen out there named Valkyrie Valentine. So...go figure.
This song feels somehow connected to Daughters of Sorrow.
This is one of my favorite songs. It is an anthem of encouragement for a wallflower type individual. The narrator is coaxing them to step out of their comfort zone and do what they love to do. It is advising the individual to be the person that they want to be doing, perhaps, what they admire in others, thus "be the one."
"Leave with the lights up" seems to be imagery with a concert how it isn't until the very end that all the lights of a venue come one. It is saying stay till the end; don't leave early; participate in living.
I really see it as advice for someone struggling in life. They are saying get out and live, do what you feel like doing, and participate in all you dream about.

I agree with the others about it being a song of encouragement for someone to have the time of their life, but the other interpretations are missing a significant detail: that this song is addressed to "Valkyrie." A valkyrie is a mythological woman who collects the souls of the dead who have fallen in battle. That seems like a very powerful symbol, that she is bringing about the end of something for somebody who was fighting to the end. My guess would be that "Valkyrie" is a woman who is ending a relationship with the singer, but it could be any situation where someone is bringing about the end of something.
The rest of the song is saying that they shouldn't just end it quietly, but instead make a real night of it. Don't just go away quietly and let it end, but make it go out with a bang. If it is about a relationship, he is probably saying that they should have some amazing night together before the relationship is finally over.
"Do your worst, do your worst" further sounds like she is ending something, and he is accepting that but he is going to make something of it before it's all over.
P.S. I think the whole wistful feeling of the song fits this interpretation, too.
This song is an anti-suicide anthem. The band is supporting the song's association with thenewgay.net as an anthem against gay suicide. Perhaps it was written with that intention; it could have been equally written as an appeal to a friend or a bullied kid contemplating suicide. Valentine was a name given to 1st century Christian martyrs. The later meaning associated with Saint Valentine's Day is adjoined presenting a picture of dying for love or heartbreak. The narration is a pleading to Valentine live and live fully ("Come on, be the One" - be who you're meant to be) as well as a reprimand to the Valkyrie not to return to Valhalla with Valentine's soul, as the Valkyrie determines who is to die on the battlefield. Valentine is depicted as someone with self doubt who doesn't see him/herself as the goldmine they are.
The lyrics "Do your worst, worst, worst; And what's worst, worst, worst; There's no words, words, words" rings of outrage at the bully or societal rejection or perhaps Valentine's inner demon. The roller disco is a symbol of the freeing of one's spirit, of not giving in to the darkness.
