I'll go for a different angle than religion. I think what the general idea of freedom that oppresses us could originate from corruption in companies and government, we've allowed too many loopholes and politicians are being bought off. This leads to the obstruction of morals, enslaving us all to those with the money and the right connections.
As a Christian, this is about the idea that we are so reluctant to give up are struggles to GOD, and that if we don't we create this hole that the ways of this world will fill and our suffering will live on.
Ya, I think you're right. The vacancy is God in our life, and we'll "take everything this world can offer" to try to fill it, when what we really need is a "new foundation".
We live our lives and base our societies on the concept of freedom, and in so doing neglect religion because of the restrictions that come with it. Yet by doing this, we fall victim to our own "impulses" and "consumption" and end up losing the freedom that we avoided God to gain.
My favorite line is "But what is control once we have let go of all we suffer?". I think it's saying "what's the point of gaining control over our lives if we could instead let go of all that makes us suffer?" AKA neglecting God is search of freedom and becoming addicted to the ways of the world.
I think that in this song, As I Lay Dying refers to the current situation of the world: as we sometimes believe achieve freedom, happiness and comfort with money and therefore we are able to steal, lie, kidnap and even shed the blood of our brothers only for after losing everything because of alcohol and drugs. Moreover I think allude to the bondage church, because we often believe that what is established by it is right when in fact the church are just humans like all of us. The idea is that we are not required to comply with all that is decreed, but rather to make what we believe is correct.
Actually, this song (as any of The Powerless Rise Album) can't be taken from the presepective of someone who believes in God as Tim Labesis explicitly said that he wrote the lyrics for the album while questioning his religion....
