Everlasting Light Lyrics
Let me be your everlasting light
Your sun when there is none
I'm a shepherd for you
And I'll guide you through
Let me be your everlasting light
Let me be your everlasting light
Your home when there is cold
In me you can confide
When no one's by your side
Let me be your everlasting light
Oh baby, can't you see
It's shining just for you
Loneliness is over
Dog days are through
They're through
Let me be your everlasting light
Your train going away from pain
Love is the coal that makes this train roll
Let me be your everlasting light
Yeah, let me be your everlasting light
Let me be your everlasting light
Be your everlasting light
Your sun when there is none
I'm a shepherd for you
And I'll guide you through
Let me be your everlasting light
Your home when there is cold
In me you can confide
When no one's by your side
Let me be your everlasting light
It's shining just for you
Loneliness is over
Dog days are through
They're through
Your train going away from pain
Love is the coal that makes this train roll
Let me be your everlasting light
Let me be your everlasting light
Be your everlasting light

I Agree, it is most deffinatly about his love for a woman and wanting her to truely love him and have him be her everything, i also feel that it's a reaching out to her to confide in him and that maybe he was in a situation where a woman wouldnt open up to him and trust him, especially considering the next song in the album is next girl and the lyrics in that song include "my next girl will be nothing like my ex-girl, it was a painful death now i got a second chance" and "i wanted love, but not for myself, but for the girl so she could love herself" this screams out to me that her not opening up to him ruined the relationship...exactly the same situation i have just been through, and its so dis-heartening and hurtful which is ironic because they dont want to open up to you in fear of getting hurt...
i also agree with mellow about there not being any of the ladys perspective or how she was feeling, but if his situation was anything like mine its hard to know really how someone feels if they dont open up to you.
to perkovich, sure there is sexual lust in there, all guys have that, but thats not solely what its about, like i said before, that is especially the case when you juxtapose it with the next track in the album...
This song is clearly about God. God is the everlasting light because He is the everlasting God. God is the sheperd that guides us. God is love and love is what makes His train roll. Im not gonna type all the lyrics because its already there but keep God in mind when you read it over again. If you ever read the bible or had someone talk to you about the bible then you would know. It does not have to do with a love of a woman or man but God telling you about Himself that He has a powerful love for you and all.

Isaiah 60: 19-20 19 The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.

I LOVE this song. This entire album is incredible. I don't usually try to look for God in every song I listen to, but it does seem blatantly obvious in this one. I agree with what itaintmebabe is saying (and great scripture btw) plus- i think it even more about God's love simply because you can't love someone everlasting...since we don't live forever. And, objectively speaking, its inevitable for our human love to be conditional at times when even we don't expect it to be. Its just nature. Furthermore, I think it slightly weird for Auerbach to be singing about...

Furthermore, I think it slightly weird for Auerbach to be singing about such an incessant love (if it indeed where about him and another person) just before title tracks like "Too Afraid to Love You" or even "Ten Cent Pistol". Perhaps, even if he doesn't believe in God, he starts such an album like this off with a song like this to contrast such types of love. Maybe he's yearns for something like this? Maybe he yearns for something like this from his 'earthly' relationships? Idk- But I still think it highly spiritual.
If sound can take the shape of light and give you a loving hug...this song got it. Anyone else notice the poetic metrical feet of the words? I go into more detail about it here and would like to hear your thoughts about it:

I love this song- it is the perfect start to one of the best albums of 2010.
As for the meaning- pretty straight forward, a man wants to be everything to the woman he loves.
Dan's voice is great on this one. These guys know how to open an album that is for sure.
i think it's interesting how this song is about the man's love---apparently it's everlasting...or he thinks it is, wants it to be. still there's nothing said about how the lady feels. although i would presume his sentiment's reciprocated, given the upbeat presentation. some musician could really turn some heads by playing this with a heart-break vibe, like a guy pleading his case to a cold heart.
merry listening.
That's a good point, it does seem a little one-sided and hollow. Maybe "Next Girl" being the very next track is significant.

But really, it's so fucking catchy that I just don't care.

Agreed the lyrics are straightforward, but surprised nobody's come out and said this song is solely about a dude that wants to love a woman, and I mean LOVE a woman. It's such a pure blues expression of sexual lust. The soundtrack of this man's libido.
I adore this song and it really does make an awesome opening track for a great album!
I was pregnant when this album came out, and I sang it almost every day to my unborn baby. At that time in my life, it made more sense to me that the song was from a father to his child than to a lover, especially since the second verse is actually "I'll hold and never scold," rather than, "Your home when there is cold." It's really sweet, actually, when you listen to it from that perspective.
Absolutely beautiful, I agree...because no other love can compare!

Person A cries for the attention & love of person B. Nothing seems to work. A´s song is not heard by B. The first lines of it have some biblical essence, something religious: the sheperd, the guidance, the light. A is almost praying. Seems B has another priorities in life, so those prayers cannot be heard. Someone claims nothing is said about the lady perspective. But I think the story could apply to any person, no matter of genders. When we mean nothing in the other person´s agenda, the only thing we can do is to write a song like this. Which, by the way, is a beautiful one.
