Our War Lyrics

SPOKEN:
When we were in our youth
We had dreams that we could fly
We had friends that were invisible
And love that never died
And as we grew old
And felt the pain
We always knew the truth
The love would heal
If we stayed true
To the dreams of our youth

SUNG:
I've been walking 'round for hours
Holding on to stems of flowers
My chest is feeling all your pain
As it begins to rain
And now the end has come to this
The little victories I'll miss
Of everything we've overcome
And all that's said and done

CHORUS:
I'm leaving our war behind
Life can go on without you
I'm leaving our war behind
The night that I leave town

The walls that you and me took down
Are only getting taller now
And I even forgotten how
To stand on my own two feet
I wanna say I'm on my own
And happier to be alone
But everything I do alone
Has everything of you

CHORUS
I'm leaving our war behind
Life can go on without you
I'm leaving our war behind
The night that I leave town
Don't tell me to justify
Living my life without you
I'm leaving our war behind
The night that I leave town

BRIDGE
All my life its always the same thing x3
Well, its always the same
Always the same...
Always the same...
Always the same thing

Ooh-o-o-o

CHORUS

Lead singer Tyler Glenn claims that "Our War" is his favorite track on Habits. The song is a heartbreaking plea to a girl he dated for two years. He even prepared for marriage by asking his aunt for a family heirloom ring. The song traces the day things started to fall apart, when the couple were supposed to take a trip to Salt Lake City. "I was at a bus stop waiting in the rain all day," he says. "I walked all day in the rain. Looking back on it, it felt cinematic. But since then it's bottled up and made me not trust. Maybe the whole next Neon Trees album will be more angry."

Oops. My bad. One lyric is wrong... Should be:

"Everything I do alone Has every BIT of you"

So, what does this song mean? Well, for me it means this: Sometimes you have to give up something good for the greater good, either as a whole or individually.. In this case, the conflict these two people have in their relationship is making it hard to stay together even though its hard to stay apart. I can relate. I met a fantastic girl once. Pure angel. Perfect for me in almost every way; beautiful, talented, well-adjusted, smart, etc. But had very different religious beliefs and it became 'our war'. I had to leave it behind. Life has gone on without her. Sigh.

My Interpretation

I think this song is about growing up, a "bildungsroman" of a song, if you will. The things that seemed so important and significant didn't seem so important once he realized the big picture.

Lyric Correction

Sorry, just felt I had to make a tiny bit of corrections in the lyrics. Like the I've even forgotten and the stand on my two feet. Also the "has every bit of you" part you mentioned.
