Alamo in Alabama Lyrics
I wasn't so bad
23 it was time for me
Not to be
How did I get pushed into thinking
That my family'd be better off
Better off
An Alamo in Alabama ma ma ma ma ma
He was only so good
Only 5 he only spoke when he was spoken to
Hadn't seen any of the cruel cruel world
Not a lesson learned or an angry word
Alamo in Alabama
This was supposed to be daddy's last night
Sonny I tried to tell you
That I could not find the handle
But when I'm gone I get away far gone
Safe to say that I'll be blowing out the candles
But I think I better leave one on
He just sat on the bed looking down
"Hey daddy is that where we're going to?"
"Yes sonny we're going to get the hell out while we can
Because maybe it's better out there."
On the verge
Of the edge
In the doorway
By the ledge
The Alamo in Alabama
This was supposed to be
Daddy's last night
Sonny I tried to tell you
That I could not find the handle
But when I'm gone I get away far gone
Safe to say that I'll be blowing out the candles
But I think I better leave one on
I'm gonna leave you
I don't want to lead you on.
23 it was time for me
Not to be
That my family'd be better off
Better off
Only 5 he only spoke when he was spoken to
Hadn't seen any of the cruel cruel world
Not a lesson learned or an angry word
This was supposed to be daddy's last night
That I could not find the handle
But when I'm gone I get away far gone
But I think I better leave one on
"Hey daddy is that where we're going to?"
"Yes sonny we're going to get the hell out while we can
Because maybe it's better out there."
Of the edge
In the doorway
By the ledge
This was supposed to be
Daddy's last night
That I could not find the handle
But when I'm gone I get away far gone
But I think I better leave one on
I'm gonna leave you
I don't want to lead you on.

A father considering leaving (or committing suicide.) The narrator (the father) sounds depressed and in some bad situation. Can't get his life under control; "could not find the handle."
However, it appears his young son's innocence made him reconsider. At least at that time. The final couple of lines make it unclear. "I'm gonna leave you, I don't want to lead you on." Maybe he's just saying he will die eventually, but not tonight. Maybe he thinks he'll have to "leave" eventually anyways, but he'll stay for now.
Well done, @hornythecandle. I think that's what I was hearing as a first impression.
"It's safe to say that I'll be blowing out the candles" would seem to imply it's happening eventually, one way or another. "But I think I better leave one one" says he's hanging around for the moment. Really amazing. Beautiful music.
