Gimme Your Money Please Lyrics

I was walking on down the alley
When a face I've never seen
Came forth from deep in the darkness
And his mouth came on real mean

And I saw that he'd been liquored
And he staggered up to, you know
He staggered up to his feet
And he said, "Boy, you'd better move real slow
And gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Being born and raised in New York
There ain't nothing you won't see
'Cause the streets are filled with bad goings-on
And you know that's no place to be

But my car broke down in the evening
You know it just stopped stone cold
Stopped stone cold in the street
And a dirty mean man with sharp glass eyes
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Being born and raised in New York
There ain't nothing you won't see
'Cause the streets are filled with bad goings-on
And you know that's no place to be

But my car broke down in the evening
You know it just stopped stone cold
Stopped stone cold in the street
And a dirty mean man with a shotgun in his hand
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Cover art for Gimme Your Money Please lyrics by Bachman-Turner Overdrive

The hero of the song is describing how he wouldn't have been anywhere near the mean streets of New York City if his car hadn't broke down, which left him vunerable to being robbed at gunpoint. This is simply about life in New York City in the pre-Guliani Ed Koch-era 70's. Muggings and robberies at gumpoint were commonplace at this time. (They still exist in NYC to some extent but nowhere near as bad as in the 70's.)
One funny aside...the lyrics talk about "being born and raised in New York"...which is ironic since all of the members of Bachman-Turner Overdrive were born and raised in CANADA.

@tkvox Actually, things are worse in NYC now (2023), if you can believe that, and I was born & raised there. That aside, it was/is a great song.
