Strange Terrain Lyrics
We read the signs completely backwards
no one could see if we ended up
where we needed to be
to find out how it all works with
so many partners
and nobody wants, nobody wants to sit
behind the wheel, behind the wheel
Who's the one pounding the gears
avoiding the crowds
keeping their ear to the ground?
Oh I’ve made a mistake
I never learned how to get back to the place, ohhh
Where have all the signs gone?
I don't know where I am without them
in our lives
We made designs completely backwards
and nobody knows if we’re even close
to where we need to go
to find out how it all works with
so many artists and nobody
wants to sit behind the wheel, behind the wheel
(Get your own map)
Who's the one pounding the gears
avoiding the crowds, keeping their ear to the ground?
Oh I’ve made a mistake
I never learned how to get back to the place
where all our confidence kept us behind a shield
Only light could get through
where all our confidence kept us behind a shield
Only light could get through
Where have all the signs gone?
I don't know where I am without them
in our lives
no one could see if we ended up
where we needed to be
to find out how it all works with

I'm pretty confident in my interpretation on this one (unlike many other Circa songs).
I think this song is about society in general. People have lots of different partners, dress a certain way, act a certain way, all of the nuances of being part of a group. But Anthony is suggesting that nobody is auditing this practice. Trends and morals are drifting along without anyone "behind the wheel" and "keeping their ear to the ground" to see if what we're doing as a group is correct or right. Our only point of reference for proper behavior is other people, with no objectivity or street signs.
This hypothetical person judging our behavior is avoiding the crowds because he is the objective truth, unburdened by the opinions of people.
I think it's about forgetting/losing who you are and the way things are supposed to go, and having nostalgia for a time when you knew. mypetmeatball's interpretation seemed pretty straight too...
love CS for always experimenting with their stuff but was totally caught off guard by this first song.
this song is definite evidence of a theme that runs throughout the album. a lot of people have posted that its the band expressing regret over switching labels but i see it just as a lot of regrets/growing up/thinking back about life. this song, in particular, speaks to the idea of "did my life go the way it should have?" the idea of nobody wanting to sit in the driver's seat is probably his expression that no one wants time to slip away (which is one of the two things that happens when you drive...the other being arriving at your destination, which in this case, we never know where we're going so it doesn't matter)
signs, obviously, can be anything. perhaps an address to materialistic tendencies of having arrived as a member of capitalist society, when he says "i don't know where i am without them / in our lives" (?) or even just the recognition of others.
I agree, I think narrowing it to be just about the record label is over-simplifying it. Atlantic didnt really change thier sound drastically anyways, so I doubt they really have too much regret over that. It seems more general life questioning and doubts.

love it!!
anyone hear what the background melody is singing?
In our lives is the first line. I don't know the second one.

You're right. The second part just repeats "In our lives". They put a different emphasis on the "our". That's why it sounds different.

i could have done without this, lol. for real. but the rest is great.
Really? I actually love this song. It's one of my favorites off of Blue Sky Noise and I feel it's an amazing opener to the album. But, everyone has their own opinon, of course.

"Where have all the signs gone? I don't know where I am without them". Sometimes in life we need something or things to remind us that life is good and okay. We can't live life for what it is. I think they're trying to say that's how most people live their lives. We don't need reminders for it to be "life".
I think it's about being in a band, opening up to a new sound and different musical ideas and considering every band member's own style and wishes for a new album. nobody really wants to push others into doing things they wouldnt wanna do, but still you gotta try to push a vision through for a song or album, without neglecting anyone else's ideas. also feeling lost with something new you dont know if it will work out the way it used to work. maybe also how some band members keep painting musical maps in different directions and some others just love to play instead of writing. all of that are conflicts you're dealing with being in a band.
i like it, it seems like it should be in a musical ^_^
haha. obviously this song is about the bands tour bus driver deciding he won't or can't drive the bus. So someone in the band has to do it. They're not used to it. Where've all the signs gone. don't know where i am without them. Nobody wants to sit behind the wheel. avoiding the crowds (traffic) where all their confidence kept them behind a (wind)shield. Only light could get through (to the back of the bus, where we're use to ). find your own map. how it all works with so many partners, artists (the next concert venue). I'm just kidding.
