Imaginary Enemy Lyrics
You're so careless, careless
How did you get so ungrateful?
You treat me like I'm a disease and it's been killing me
Chances are, you never even cared at all
I'm sure you had your reasons but I'll never get to hear
The truth disguised in all your alibis
It's a tradition practiced
Every time you say goodbye
I've tried so hard
to be what you needed
your imaginary enemy
I've tried for so long
to make you believe it
that I am not the enemy
Slipshod cavalier
I can't stand to see those things that
you have taken for granted
thrown away everything you've been handed
Too much all at once that's how you got so ungrateful
All you saw was the burden
standing beside all your blessed truths
disguised in all you alibis
It's a tradition practiced
every time you say goodbye
I've tried so hard
to be what you needed
your imaginary enemy
I've tried for so long
to make you believe it
that I am not the enemy

It's uncanny the way anthony and the rest of circa can pin point the drama in my life
thinking this song is about how he's with a girl that he completely adores and does everything for but she just doesn't seem to take notice of how much he cares and just sees all his flaws, she has probably left him a few times or threatened too ..."All you saw was the burden,...,It's a tradition practiced, every time you say goodbye"... she sees him as just something in her way/ all she can see him as is an enemy, which is in his opinion is an imaginary enemy, because he actually in truth, cares for her idk just my take on it, not sure if it made much sense lol
I agree completely. That was my very first thought. It's easy to see the meaning when it has happened to you =/

i am in love with this. in my opinion, ten times better than get out; and i loved get out.
Imaginary enemy doesn't pertain to just a selfish, ungrateful girl. This song describes my ex-boyfriend down to a tee. The singer is expressing how their partner has turned them into an enemy suddenly because they are very ungrateful of the other person in the relationship. The partner dumping the other person treats the "dumpee" as a disease, burden, responsiblity, nuisance etc. The singer notices that their partner has a simliar pattern in life - "All you saw was the burden standing beside all your blessed truths disguised in all you alibis It's a tradition practiced every time you say goodbye" - Once they get tired of being in a relationship the person lies and comes up with excuses, they've also done this in the past with other relationships possibly because its a "tradition" or sorta always ends up happening. "I've tried so hard to be what you needed" - the other person in the relationship tries so very hard to be exactly what their partner needs but..they can't seem to live up to them.. So once the relationship ends..."I've tried for so long to make you believe it that I am not the enemy" -the person being dumped tries to convince their partner that they aren't the problem or their "enemy".
Come on, can you honestly say it's not amazing when he sings "to be what you needed"? so awesome. these songs definitely have a more direct and in-your-face sound. I'm excited to hear the rest of the album. So far, this has such a wonderful surprise for me.
I'm soo excited for Blue Sky Noise to come out! And I'm soo pumped to see them in concert on May 14th in Chicago! They're opening for Coheed and Cambria who are pretty good too, but Circa is AWESOME.
I actually like this song, I think it's interesting that some people are worried Blue Sky Noise doesn't have enough "mystery" when I think the songs are just on more approachable topics this time around, where Juturna was hard to grasp if you never saw Endless Sunshine and On Letting Go had all this religious allusion. All three amazing albums as far as I'm concerned.
I don't see what all the fuss is about this song, I think it's a great song and Blue Sky Noise as a whole holds up to their other albums quite well.
I think there's reason this song follows "I Felt Free", I think it's addressing the same relationship in a different light. Where in "I Felt Free" he takes a more optimistic look at it and addresses all the positive things in ending it . "Imaginary Enemy" takes a more accusatory tone, and puts the faults of the relationship failing onto the one he's singing to. Addressing her ungratefulness, and selfishness and need to make him into an enemy. He's tried to make it work, but he's tired of it so he let it all his frustrations out and ended it. Which lead him to feel the way he does in "I Felt Free". the songs could really be the other way around and make more sense in story flow, but the recorddoes seem to flow better in this order
Such an amazing song.
I happen to think this song is about "fans" hating on him. I just get that vibe. He's saying he's tried so hard to be what you needed. Meaning he's always made the music he has loved while trying to cater to us. Of course, I'm probably wrong. lol
