The song is from the perspective of someone who doesn't understand "selfless" love and can only understand selfish motivations. So they conclude that everyone else is the same, with only selfish love. They pick and choose who they proclaim to love (and seduce and sleep with) for their own selfish benefits. They assume that everyone who doesn't go for their own benefit like is doing it out of cowardice, not because of any emotional attachment to those they dismiss as "dirt".
The meaning of the ritual, the reason for sex, for them is lacking in any expression of intimacy and just a selfish fulfilment of carnal needs.

This song was one of those that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. I usually forget to listen to lyrics but when I first heard the villagers it was as if I had to, their words gave me chills. That last line about the puppet, I remember hearing it for the first time and just thinking "holyshit this is good stuff" and then hitting replay continuously. It's so short and simple, but it's so poetic that it can't not be memorable.
