Do-Wah-Doo Lyrics

Everybody thinks that girl's so fine
Everybody's like, "I'll make her mine"
Everyone thinks she's a bit of alright
But I think that she's not so nice
Every guy's looking in her eyes
Every guy's checking out her thighs
Everyone thinks that girl's a lady
But I don't, I think that girl's shady

Well I'll just read a book instead
I don't care if we're just friends
I can hang out with myself
I'm old enough now to pretend
Well I'll just read a book instead
I know that you think she's best
I don't even think she cares
I don't know what you see
There's nothing there

Bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
[etc.]

Well I think she's a -

Well I'll just read a book instead
I don't care if we're just friends
I can hang out with myself
I'm old enough now to pretend
Well i'll just read a book instead
I know that you think she's best
I don't even think she cares
I don't know what you see
There's nothing there

Bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum
Bum bum ba dum ba dum ba dum

I think she's a BITCH.

What Kate said about it in Spin magazine: "The song's about one of my best friends from when I was younger. He totally betrayed me by hanging out with these enemies of mine - these perfect girls, who wore lip-gloss and talked about boys and were really annoying. He and I had grown up climbing trees, playing in the woods, and going on holiday together, so I thought he'd be cooler than that. But when he turned 15 years old he wanted a girlfriend. I was like, 'Well fine, I'll just pretend I don't give a shit even though I'll never ever forgive you, even when I'm 22 years old and writing a song about it."

This really summarises my attitude to boys and describes an accurate portrayal of adolescence. When boys realise girls and vice versa, people change. It is a roller-coaster of ups and downs, but quite frankly I would rather just read a book.

"its based on when i was like 14 and i had this best friend who when we were really young we used to like literally climb trees together and like play in the woods and he was a guy and it was just kinda like we were brother and sister.. and then when we went to secondary school when there was like a bunch of girls and guys that hung out and he started hanging out with like these bitchy girls who were into lipgloss and boys and stuff. and he totally ditched me for them and i couldnt believe it. i was really upset cos i was like youre not one of those people, you're like me, like we don't like those kind of people. and i feel like erm really betrayed and it's about that. but in the song it's made out like it's more romantic, but it's kind of just like when someone ditches you for the miss or mr perfect you know and you can't believe that they've done it."

Has anyone else noticed that the guitar riff that opens the song is taken directly from Regina Spektor's "that time." Well it is...

This song sums up how I feel at the moment. Love Kate and love this song.

The meaning is pretty damn obvious I think.

Yes, very straight forward meaning. I think she's jealous of this whore-ish girl,

My Interpretation

This is what Kate said about it: "I really hope you guys like it and think it's fun and get it. the song's about when you're best friend betrays you by ditching you & hanging out with the mean girls because they're pretty and don't have sweaty red faces and bruised knees. this has happened at school.

It kind of delves a little into the fact that us girls are always set against each other in society, how girls are meant to view each other as competition and feel insecure and shit, you know you can always sense it when a girl views you like that even though you just want to be their best friend? but at the same time it's not really about that, it's just about someone who's mean. like if a guys a dick he's just a dick there's no real politics behind that. and if a girls a bitch then she's a bitch. it just depends if you're offended by those words I guess, and depends in which context they're used. maybe I should have used the word arsehole, that's non gender specific. but it just didn't have the same ring to it, no pun intended. anyway it's not really that serious it's just a fun pop song really."

I didn't love this at first. Dig it now.

she said this too “Do Wah Doo” is about a girl who just instantly sees you as competition because you’re female. She would not at all stand by you. If there’s a boy involved, you’re nothing to them. There are some girls like that that you meet and I find it confusing.
