The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Just open up like a page in a book.
These words that I'm writing wont be misunderstood
If I'm dishonest bring me back to my knees.
Show me why I'm even able to speak.
I'll testify please help me to see.
Don't close your eyes, keep your eyes on me.
Open up, open up now make me strong.
There's blood on my hands, but the killers not my enemy.
It's all for the sake of love, It's all for you.
[Chorus]
When all we know is falling I'll save something for you you who are all alone.
When everything is beautiful, when everything's OK.
Even if it's not OK I'll say It's all for you.
These hands hold up nothing but scars underneath
From swimming these oceans and learning to breathe
So often I tell them so often they listen to me
So make me strong
There's blood on my hands
But the killers not my enemy
It's all for the sake of love
It's all for you
[Chorus]
I can feel it in my fingertips
I can taste it in the air
I know some how there is something
There is something new
I see it so clearly
I can feel your hands on my fingertips
I'm seeing oh so clear
I know it's for you
I see so clear
[Chorus]
These words that I'm writing wont be misunderstood
If I'm dishonest bring me back to my knees.
Show me why I'm even able to speak.

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
this song is so amazing :D
The lyrics are so religious, it just makes me so fucking uncomfortable. That said, I still love the song. But ugh, the lyrics -__- :///
I actually find some of the lines in the song a bit anti-religous. He's obviously singing the song from the perspective of someone who believes in God, but it almost sounds a little satirical, like he's criticizing himself.<br /> <br /> "There's blood on my hands, but the killers not my enemy.<br /> It's all for the sake of love, It's all for you. "<br /> <br /> It sounds a lot like he's committing an act which he himself considers wrong ("the killer is not my enemy", perhaps indicating that the killer is himself), but he quickly ascertains that it's an act of love in God's eyes, which he uses to convince himself to follow through with the act.<br /> (I.e. when God tells Abraham to kill his son.)<br /> <br /> Then there's this line which kinda gives me the same message:<br /> "When everything is beautiful, when everything's OK.<br /> Even if it's not OK I'll say It's all for you."<br /> <br /> Even if he thinks that what's going on and what he's doing is not OK, he'll still accept it, because it's for God's sake.<br /> <br /> "These words that I'm writing wont be misunderstood"<br /> Just a little note on this line. I think of the ones who wrote the bible when I hear this. It's like he's impersonating them, saying "There's no need to worry for me what I write down, people won't take these words the wrong way." and evidently, there is a lot of people who use the bible to explain their acts of hate, possibly having misinterpreted words in it.<br /> <br /> The more I look into it, the more I think of the song as anti-religious :S<br /> <br /> I think it's about those who rely to much on God and their religion and blind themselves from what they truly believe.
Yeah fun fact, he wrote this with me in mind…yeah, he’s like…sorta my wife
