Running Lyrics

Because I always feel like running.
Not away, because there's no such place.
Because if there was, I would have found it by now.
Because it's easier to run,
Easier than staying and finding out you're the only one, who didn't run.
Because running will be the way your life and mine will be described,
As in, 'the long run' or
As in, 'having given someone a run for their money' or
As in, 'running out of time'.
Because running makes me look like everyone else, though I hope there will never be cause for that.
Because I will be running in the other direction,
Not running for cover.
Because if I knew where cover was,
I would stay there and never have to run for it.
Not running for my life
Because I have to be running for something of more value to be running, and not in fear.
Because the thing I fear cannot be escaped, eluded, avoided, hidden from, protected from, gotten away from,
Not without showing the fear, as I see it now,
Because closer, clearer, no-sir, nearer
Because of you, and because of that nice,
That you quietly, quickly be causing
And because you going to see me run soon
And because you going to know why I'm running then,
You'll know then, because I'm not,
Going to tell you
Now.

I like to see it as love, which might sound simplistic, I think it's the idea that even if he runs, he can't escape love, which may actually be his fear. At least, not without showing (the fear) love, first, the way he is seeing it given to him now. And because she's inspiring those feelings inside him, he runs. It makes me feel like the last two lines are saying that it's going to impact her the same way-- because he ran, she'll always be running too, because love is scarier when you've been hurt before. Maybe that's the reason he runs in the first place.

My Interpretation

The entire song is a response to a question posed about running. Why you'd run- him or anyone. And I imagine he keeps saying why because the unspoken other keeps asking for a reason sufficiently justifiable to explain the act of running. Why anyone would. Running is a choice. To get up and start running requires more than just energy and effort and time.If you run because you love it, you get it. If you run because -- of many reasons why people do which, here, these lyrics, he's implying when he answer why and then negates the rationality of that reason. If you don't run, this song is for you too. It makes no sense to many who ask why I run everyday. Because. I won't tell you bc I cannot say why I just do it and I know but it's a fallacy of language to explain. It must be felt. That's how this song feels to me. Like running for the right reasons which are anything except extrinsic, aescetic, appearance-driven, escapism, change etc.
