It Is What It Is Lyrics
I was only looking for a shortcut home
But it's complicated
So complicated
Somewhere in this city is a road I know
Where we could make it
But maybe there's no making it now
Too long we've been denying
Now we're both tired of trying
We hit a wall and we can't get over it
Nothing to relive
It's water under the bridge
You said it, I get it
I guess it is what it is
I was only trying to bury the pain
But I made you cry and I can't stop the crying
Was only trying to save me
But I lost you again
Now there's only lying
Wish I could say it's only me
Too long we've been denying
Now we're both tired of trying
We hit a wall and we can't get over it
Nothing to relive
It's water under the bridge
You said it, I get it
I guess it is what it is
Here it comes ready or not
We both found out it's not how we thought
That it would be, how it would be
If the time could turn us around
What once was lost may be found
For you and me, for you and me
Too long we've been denying
Now we're both tired of trying
We hit a wall and we can't get over it
Nothing to relive
It's water under the bridge
You said it, I get it
I guess it is what it is

There's no hidden meaning to this song. Its plainly put in sight to be seen, heard, felt. Two words: Lost love. The song is great, but knowing the feeling sucks balls. I suppose anyone reading this, or listening to the song knows the feeling. Do you have that gnawing emptiness in your chest like I do? Its the fact that time moves in one direction and there is no do-overs in this life that makes it worse. I personally like the visual right at the beginning, of looking for a shortcut home. Anyone wanting a mate, a companion, a lover, a boyfriend or girlfriend, feels that need to find home. Home in the sense that a lover makes you feel comfortable and safe, like being truly home. Sometimes we search for shortcuts to that place of peace, and end up in the thorns. Still, somewhere in this city (this life) is a road I know, where we (or me, or me and someone else) could make it. Never give up.
This is in no relation to the song, but I just wanted to say that I thought what you wrote was really beautiful and hope it inspires and brings hope to many people. I wish I could write something that beautiful.

My personal favorite off the album. Relates so well to my current situation
it's a song about a love that has come to an end, and he's saying how he regrets that it's over...at least that's my interpretation!
i love this song!!
This is definitely one of their greatest songs off the album. It sums up what everyone has felt at some point in life or another.
this is my second favorite from the album of smoke and mirrors. "i guess it is what it is" haha.
This song is really great. I particularly like the city metaphor he uses at the open of the song...and kind of throughout, as well.
Amazing.
Guess that sums up the song quite well.
this is a song about a love that has been so good for a very long time to a point where on actually loses pieces of themselves in it but has taken a wrong turn and finally crumbled but no one wants to admit it, so they keep trying again and again until the relationship becomes sustained by lies. we have been all there, the love that was great and we keep going back until we actually taint our memories of it. what a great song to listen to.
what is the line ..."looking for the shortcut home" mean?
