Not Miserable Lyrics

Well this is easier now
I've found all the pieces that I lost in the flood
And it wasn't that much

And though it's easier now
I will always remember the night that I almost drowned
All alone in a house

And the love that I lost
With all of the shit that came out in the wash
Just a pocket of fluff

And I'm not put upon
I'm free from disease, no grays, no liver spots
Most of the misery's gone
Gone, gone to the bone

(I am)
Not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable

So the hymns that I sung
Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue
Sing of history now

Though the corners are lit
The dark can return with the flick of a switch
It hasn't turned on me yet, yet

(I am)
Not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable

(I am)
Not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable

This reminds me of "I feel Better". Very similar ideas.

My Opinion

Yeah I see what you're saying. He's saying most of the misery is gone, most. But he acknowledges that the feelings of despair could return, at the drop of a hat ("flick of a switch") but that it hasn't happened yet. Kinda like "i feel better and better and worse and then better"...

I just love the lyrics:

So the hymns that I sung Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue Sing of history now

Soo good!

I agree with DeathsRose, I think it's a response to the Midnight Organ Fight (So the hymns that I sung, Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue, Sing of history now). More specifically, I think it's a continuation of Floating in the Forth. There is a lot of water and suicide references and the backing vocals follow a very similar format.

FITF: The first verse talks about someone leaving and being 'shrink wrapped out of air'.
NM: First verse he is better than when he almost drown in his house.

Fairly self-explanatory lyrics, and a great song. I wonder if this is a reference to the generally cynical, sometimes verging on depressing tone of their previous albums? They seem to have a lot more hope on Winter of Mixed Drinks.

couldn't agree more. much more hope in this album although Midnight Organ fight is one the best albums i've ever heard

What I think, is similar to some of the comments, but has a very different spin.

Yes, I believe this is about a failed suicide attempt. Almost drowning all alone in a house nails that angle. However, this song reeks of someone trying to convince himself he is not miserable... when he very clearly IS STILL MISERABLE.

Geez, the background vocals spell it out. "I AM.. IAM.. IAM". I see this as his subconscious telling him the truth. He failed at killing himself, no one knows he tried and is seriously depressed, he fakes being not miserable, no one knows he really is. He wont admit it, but i am... i am.. iam...... miserable.

Touching and powerful song.

Apparently the 'night that (he) almost drowned' refers to a failed suicide attempt by Scott.

"Well this is easier now I've found all the pieces that I lost in the flood And it wasn't that much"

This whole song is obviously about a failed suicide attempt. And it's sad because I know exactly how he felt. To somewhat become the same person you used to be is a long process.

This song speaks volumes to me, someone who has suffered from clinical depression and has been through a shitload of drama, pain and heartache, but who has conquered it for now. I love the way the author is so honest about his losses and his weaknesses, and is confident in his happiness and health now. Much art is distilled from pain. This song belongs on my life soundtrack.

Just found this site...just found this band. Been listening to this album nonstop lately. This song is one of my favorites. Love the first verse. "Well this is easier now I've found all the pieces that I lost in the flood And it wasn't that much"

I take it to mean that after being totally destroyed...there isn't much to recover, but he did. He isn't the same full person. I think this song is positive, but from a very weak and fragile position.
