The Poison Lyrics

You are so young
And I guess I'm old
Open your eyes
I'll keep mine closed
I prefer standing
And you take your seat
I'll be wide awake
You'll be asleep

And you fall down a hole
That's the one place that we both know
You'd take me with you if you could
But I wouldn't go
I guess that sometimes
We both lose our minds
To find a better road

I can be pensive
You can be so sure
You'll be the poison
You'll be the cure
I'm alone on the journey
I'm alive, nonetheless
And when you do your very worst
It feels the best

And you fall down a hole
That's the one place that we both know
You'd take me with you if you could
But I wouldn't go
I guess that sometimes
We both lose our minds
To find a better road

And you fall down a hole
That's the one place in this world that we both know
You'd take me with you if you could
If you could
I'd lose everything

Can't you see the faces melting
As the sun fades from their eyes?
Oh, are you gonna keep your head
With the hearts that you hang behind?
Look at yourself
Look in the mirror
Don't see you see a line
That you tell yourself again a thousand times?
And the truth that makes you sad
Will make you cry
You wanna die, no

So you fall down a hole
That's the one place that we both know
You'd take me with you if you could
But I wouldn't go
Because sometimes
We both lose our minds
To find a better road

This is my favorite song off of the alice in wonderland soundtrack. was it written for the movie? at first i thought it was the mad hatter talking to alice, but now that i think about it, it seems like its the other way around. like when it says "you are so young and i guess i'm old" i kinda figured that was alice saying that the hatter is really innocent and imaginative like a child, and her "guessing" she's old is just saying that she's older now than she was when she first came to wonderland. and her mentioning she's "wide awake" while he's "asleep" is referencing the fact that she was convinced she was dreaming for almost the entire movie up until the very end.

i could be totally off, but that's just what i get out of it

I think that instead of being from only one point of view, the song has both sides of the story between the hatter and Alice. It is for sure about them but the thing is that sometimes it sounds like he's the one doing the talking while in some other parts it sounds like it's her.

i think its Pensive instead of Plaintive

i love this songg!! probably about two people who are the opposites of each other but are each others better half. still though they are poison to each other so one of them rather do without it than to fall in this "hole" with them over & over again.

Is it just me or does his voice sound way deeper until

"Can't you see the faces melting as the sun rains from their eyes, go on and keep your head with the hearts that you left behind. look at yourself, look in the mirror, don't you see a lie? that you tell yourself again a thousand times. and the truth that makes us laugh will make you cry, You wanna die? No?"

Anyways, I love this song<3

I think this song is about a forbidden love between someone older and someone young because it says "You'd take me with you if you could If you could I'd lose everything" as in if he dates her or whatever he'll go to jail. Just a guess but I really feel it's about that.

This is on the "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack, and maybe it's a leap but I think the song could be about the white queen and the red queen.

"Can't you see the faces melting as the sun rains from their eyes,"

(The obvious moat of heads in the movie)

"go on and keep your head with the hearts that you left behind. look at yourself, look in the mirror, don't you see a lie? that you tell yourself again a thousand times. and the truth that makes us laugh will make you cry,"

It didn't really click with me until just now, but I think it is about Alice talking to the Hatter. She thinks of herself as old because she's being forced to grow up and get married before she really wants to. She wants to keep her eyes closed to all the nonsense, while he embraces it. She prefers to be standing, while the hatter takes a seat at the tea party table; that she'll stay awake and try and find out what is real, while he stays asleep, content with things being messed up and unbelievable.

And wonderland is the one place they both know, because it had been in Alice's dreams before, and the Hatter want's to take her back there, but she doesn't want to because she wants to stay in a place where things are real, but sometimes they both have to loose their minds and just go to wonderland because it's a better place than real life sometimes.

She over-thinks everything because she's not really sure what to believe, and the Hatter is so sure because it's a nonsense land and he's a nonsense person. He's the poison, putting all these nonsense thoughts in her head, and he's the cure, because he's bringing her away from the ordinary. She's alone on the journey trying to find the Hatter to rescue him from the Queen; she's alone, but she's alive.

And Alice was constantly lying to herself, telling herself that Wonderland didn't exist and it was just dreams. And the truth is that she can't stay in wonderland away from her real life responsibilities forever, and the thought of going from totally bizarre and wonderful to the real world could make anyone cry. But she doesn't want to block wonderland out of her life forever, she doesn't want to be dead to it.

I hope this kinda makes sense... I was listening to the song and when you actually read the lyrics, suddenly everything pops out at you... c:

Plus, if you take out the Alice and Wonderland aspect of it, it's a really cute love song c:

When I first heard this song it made me think of Mad Hatter and Alice and Mad Hatter's perspective, but then I thought that that was a total rubbish idea. Now I think it's about Alice's dad because like, I don't know, it just fits with maybe how he feels about his daughter.

prety sure its "don't you see the lie", cos then that would make sense, cos its followed by "that you tell yourself a thousand times. song meanings is such a great site, i've used it for a while now, but finally made an account. found this song through alice, and the melody and beats are truly amazing. defs a song worth of all americans. ignoring the fact that its for alice, my interperatation is that its about a lover talking about their counter part being more free - "you'd take me with you if you could but i wouldnt go" but i'm not too sure, hence why i'm here. fav line: you'll be the poison, you'll be the cure. gotta love oxymorons.

I, personally, think that this is the best song AAR has put out there. I loooove it. I actually haven't gotten around to seeing the movie yet, but if you didn't even know that this is from the soundtrack of Alice in Wonderland, it could have a meaning for the real world. My favorite part is when he sings 'and you fall down a hole', which could be the dark stage we sometimes have to go through. 'You'd take me with you if you could, but I wouldn't go.' That part makes me think that he wouldn't want to go,...

I saw an interview with Tyson and Avril Lavigne and he said that he never write a song for something, that he wrote the song for the movie and that the song is about a terrible debutant
