To me it feels as if he's remembering an old relationship, one of that was close to ending many times, but they kept it going on the promises they made. Now he realizes just how many times it could have ended, and now admits that it was all a mistake, even if he did feel the way he did.
"Can we dig up forgiveness, where we buried the lies? Can we fill all the VOIDS from the hardest of goodbyes."
-The lyrics are wrong, he says "Can we fill all the VOIDS from the hardest goodbyes" not poison. This is my favorite line from the song, and really holds a lot of emotion. For a moment he seems to want to try one more time and let everything that went wrong before die, and maybe they could start over.
