I Speak Because I Can Lyrics

My husband left me last night
Left me a poor and lonely wife
I cooked the meals and he got the life
And now I'm just out for the rest of my time
For me
For he
For my

I speak because I can
To anyone I trust enough to listen.
You speak because you can
To anyone who'll hear what you say.
I swear it was not my choice
I used to be so kind.

Never road my bike down to the sea
Never finished that letter I was writing.
Never got up and shared anything
For me
For he
For my

Oh graceful sleeper
Midnight dreamer
I'm flawed by your sound.
I'm flawed by your sound.

I swear it was not my choice.
To reach out for someone wise.
I used to be so kind.
I used to be so kind.

In the breaking of the morning you'll be dancing on the soft lawn
You'll be sinking at the anchor that stopped you from taking my gold
You'll be running up the highway singing "I'm the king the king of you all!"
When you look back to where you started I'll be there waving you on.

I never road my bike down to the sea
Never quite figured out what I believe
Never got up and shared anything
For me
For he
For my

I know this song is supposed to be about Penelope singing to Odysseus, but I'm sensing a little Laura Marling singing to Charlie Fink. She does tend to draw comparisons between herself and strong, female characters, so it will make sense.

My Opinion

I got that idea too. I hate reading personal stuff into songs but the 'I speak because I can to anyone I trust enough to listen/You speak because you can to anyone who'll hear what you say' bit made me think of how public Charlie made the break-up with his album, while Laura's references to it are really subtle, if there at all.

This song is describing the mental state of Penelope at the fag end of her 20 years wait for Odysseus/Ulysses coming back from Trojan War. Probably during the times when Penelope has arranged for the contest for her suitors to string the bow of Odysseus (her patience has worn off/ she knows no one can string the bow except Odysseus) and win her as prize. Now she has met a stranger among her suitors, who is actually Odysseus in disguise/ disheveled from his adventures and somewhat fallen for him, thus the lines "I'm floored by your sound" but on the other hand she still feels for Odysseus "When you look back to where you started I'll be there waving you on." Marling uses this classic example of cognitive dissonance from ancient Greek mythology, showing the motifs are still analogous in present human life, probably touch us all at some point of life. One has to be really lucky in life to avoid this test of intention.

To me it sounds like a woman who basically lived through her husband and therefore "Never got up and shared anything worthy". And now her husband has left her she regrets not doing all the things she wanted to do. and now she's dreaming of who she could be now she is free.

I always feel like this song sums up everything i am scared of happening in my life

I think this is a theme which runs throughout the album, especially in Rambling man.
