Swim Lyrics

Quit hanging over me,
Look at the hair on the back of my neck.
Standing up on the rooftops,
Remembering everything she said.

Swim to reach the end,
But I am steady not to offend,
On whom can you depend?
Swim to reach the end.

Swim to reach the end (x4)

Lucid afternoon dream
Cosmopolitan scene.
Look at what's in store for me.
Heads will turn in disbelief.

Relish in your energy.
That's the line of symmetry. (x2)

Swim to reach the end,
But I am steady not to offend,
On whom can you depend?
Swim to reach the end.

Swim to reach the end (x4)

I think its all right there at "standing up on the rooftops, remembering everything she said." Its over and he's sad about it, doing crazy stuff like standing on the roof thinking about her. But he's also telling himself "what else can you do but get on with your life, one step at a time" or in this metaphor, one stroke at a time, just keep swimming until you get somewhere [somewhere else].

So I guess I kind of agree with easytrick on "you can't depend on anyone but yourself." I think the Cosmopolitan scene is a way of saying, "I'll get past this... you'll all see." Likewise, "relish in your energy" = its all up to you, you can do this, you can get past this dark time.

I don't know what "that's the line of symmetry" means in this song, but it is a great line anyway. This song is such a great song to sing/shout with your car CD player very very loud.

I think it's about making a good impression on someone, but you're thoughts are too far off on someone else that you end up rushing to get rid of them, hence "swim to reach the end". Like ending a meaningful relationship, finding a new mix, and then then it not living up to what you had with your ex. I suggest seeing them live if you get any chance. They're immaculate.

My Interpretation

I def think it is about a breakup, like dcba suggests.

He keeps thinking about her... hence the hairs on the back of his neck tingling as he keeps reliving memories. "Quick hanging over me" = get out of my head!

The "swim to reach the end" is his way of telling himself to get over her, but he also is confused as to what happened and is a little depressed. He tells himself he tried hard to be a good boyfriend (by "not offend"'ing), but things fell apart anyway and he feels betrayed, like he cant trust anyone, "On whom can you depend?"

"Lucid afternoon dream Cosmopolitan scene. Look at what's in store for me. Heads will turn in disbelief."

I think this verse is him getting back out into the bar/dating scene. Who would believe it. :)
