So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
And too much, much is never enough
I had you and I gave you up
And no, I don't know where my mind where was for months
I woke up, I cashed in all of my luck
It walked in hand with your trust
And everybody was kissing fire
And we all got burned
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
Caught you having a laugh
Did you catch me have the last?
And I've been smiling like this for days
Just to make up for my mistakes
In the dark, I watch everyone disappear
And I'm beginning to let myself down
And I'm pushing everyone that was in, out
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
And nobody knows what it's like
When we die on the inside
And nobody knows what it's like
To be one of a kind
When we die, do we feel alive?
When we die, do we feel alive?
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
And nobody knows what it's like
When we die on the inside
And nobody knows
I had you and I gave you up
And no, I don't know where my mind where was for months
I woke up, I cashed in all of my luck
It walked in hand with your trust
And everybody was kissing fire
And we all got burned
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
Caught you having a laugh
Did you catch me have the last?
And I've been smiling like this for days
Just to make up for my mistakes
In the dark, I watch everyone disappear
And I'm beginning to let myself down
And I'm pushing everyone that was in, out
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
And nobody knows what it's like
When we die on the inside
And nobody knows what it's like
To be one of a kind
When we die, do we feel alive?
When we die, do we feel alive?
It'd be safer to hate her
Than love her and lose her
It'd be safer to hate her all around
And nobody knows what it's like
When we die on the inside
And nobody knows

favorite part.
I'm guessing about him getting with her, everyone disagreeing with it and they were right about her and he regrets it
This song is fairly simple. Its about josh and his ex of 18 months and how she cheated on him forcing him to leave. The song is part of his thoughts on it all.
"And too much, much is never enough..."
he tried his best but its not enough for her.
"It'd be safer to hate her Than love her and lose her It'd be safer to hate her all around"
It'd be easier for him to be bitter about it and deny the truth, that he cares and still has feelings for her.
"Caught you having a laugh Did you catch me have the last? And I've been smiling like this for days Just to make up for my mistakes In the dark, I watch everyone disappear And I'm beginning to let myself down And I'm pushing everyone that was in, out"
he sees she's moving on and he's acting like it doesn't phase him, when of course it does. Later he can't help but to sit and dwell on everything, and he feels sorry for himself. He's cornering himself into a state of seclusion in which he's so far gone that the people that matter the most can't reach him anymore.
"And nobody knows what it's like When we die on the inside And nobody knows what it's like To be one of a kind"
He's having an emotional crises. He feels an inner pain that he feels nobody can relate too, even if they've gone through something of the same nature because they aren't him, they don't feel, respond, or mentally perceive things as he does. He feels he is the last of a dying breed, Genuine and Faithful.
"When we die, do we feel alive?"
This is the iffy part of it all. He may be considering suicide as a easy way out, but i seriously doubt it. I believe he's speaking once more on an emotional level. She took a part of him that may never come back leaving him not only scarred but crushed. He's felt pain but never at this level. What he's saying is when a lose a part of yourself the feelings are so intense that you know they are real. They give him a feeling he's never known but one i think on the inside many of us secretly long for. A Beautiful Letdown.
That's how i see everything but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and interpretations but that's what i got out of it as a student and 16 year old vocalist/songwriter. I'm new to this so please reply and give me your thoughts. :)
thats quite good and literal, i'm no more qualified than you are to comment on the meaning of the lyrics and to be honest you might be right considering that it's all linked back to his past relationship. <br /> I just have a few ideas that spring to my mind when i listen to this song. <br /> I personally find it to be more bitter and about regret. Almost as if saying that he wishes that he had hated her rather than loved her because it would have been 'safer'. Obviously there was a lot of pain in the break up which is making him question whether loving her was worth it at all. <br /> <br /> Obviously the whole first verse is about regretting the way that he let the break up happen and I feel like the verse;<br /> <br /> 'Caught you having a laugh<br /> Did you catch me have the last?<br /> And I've been smiling like this for days<br /> Just to make up for my mistakes<br /> In the dark, I watch everyone disappear<br /> And I'm beginning to let myself down<br /> And I'm pushing everyone that was in, out'<br /> <br /> Is about him reacting to her after the fact and realising that he is acting petty and bitter but he can't help it because she inspires those feelings inside him and he can't make how he felt about her and how much losing her is affecting him (at the moment) for the worse.<br /> <br /> This song to me, is about that stage after you end things badly with someone and you still cling to the memory and everything seems to remind you of them and because of that everything hurts. If you've been around someone at this stage than you'll agree that they tend to make terrible company and you can't get through to them that it will all pass. To them it seems like it will never get better and they generally wish things along the lines of "I wish i had never meet her/him". <br /> <br /> In that reading i think that the line;<br /> <br /> 'When we die, do we feel alive?'<br /> <br /> relates to;<br /> <br /> 'And nobody knows what it's like<br /> When we die on the inside<br /> And nobody knows what it's like<br /> To be one of a kind'<br /> <br /> And is basically a round-about way of saying; is this really good for us to feel this way?/is it really worth being in love when we're risking getting our hearts broken? kinda like we don't feel good about it so why do we put ourselves through it. Which reflects the thoughts of those people who are going through a tough break up before they realise that they move on and grow as people from it. <br /> <br /> Like I said, my opinions are no more valid than yours but thats how i see it.
