Stranger In a Strange Land Lyrics

Enemy of mine
I'll fuck you like the devil
Violent inside
Beautiful and evil
I'm a ghost
You're an angel
We're one and the same
Just remains of an age

Lost in the daydream
What do you see
If you're looking for Jesus
Then get on your knees

Enemy of mine
I'm just a stranger in a strange land
Running out of time
We better go go go

Angel or a demon
I gave up my soul
I'm guilty of treason
I've obandoned control

Tonight

The end is coming
Everybody run
Now we're gonna live forever
Gonna live forever
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Angels coming
Everybody run
Everybody run
You wanna live forever tonight
Gonna live forever
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Angel or demon
Everybody run
Everybody run
You wanna live forever tonight
Gonna live forever
Tonight

Lost in the daydream
What do you see
If you're looking for Jesus
Then get on your knees

Angel or demon
I gave up my soul
I'm guilty of treason
I've obandoned control

Your soul

I think the title either refers to the book Stranger In A Strange Land or to the Book of Exodus (from which the sci fi book took its title).I don't take the song to be literally about God or Jesus, but that those are analogies. I think the song speaks of salvation and finding "righteousness" so to speak and the extremes of goodness and evil which people are capable of. The whole album has a disapproving tone of society and humanity and how we choose to conduct ourselves and destroy ourselves from the inside out. "I'm guilty of treason" probably speaks of giving into society's values and our general way of life and betraying what we know to be a better way. It also seems to be a song of death, "Angel or demon, it came for my soul" has almost an apocalyptic sound to it, stating that something is coming for us and saying "gonna live forever tonight" The song states to get on your knees if youre looking for Jesus, which probably is an analogy for "repenting" and changing our (society's) ways to live in a better fashion. Also, in the book of the same title, the main character was raised on Mars (nice reference to their name) and doesn't understand "human" things such as war and jealousy (although he himself is human but was just raised by Martians). He was "a stranger in a strange land" once he was returned to earth and hoped to change humanity into more of a Martian type society and only understood the concept of God as a being that was understood by being part of it and a unit of oneness amongst creation. The song could be alluding to the book in that sense as well.

My Interpretation

HI! I also liked your interpretation..still, I wanted to ask you about 'Vatican's son'. What do you think they meant? is there an insult to catholic church? I hope I am wrong! I love there music, but..

Wow, this is one of the best interpretations I've seen of any song with this difficult-elaborated-almostsenceless-lyrics. You're amazing, I would have never understood the song

Yeah, a great lyrical insight! But I don't think its 'vaticon's son' its 'I've abandoned control'

"I'm a ghost you're an angel one that was saved just remains of an age"

i feel should be I'm a ghost you're an angel one in the same just remains of an age

and angels coming everybody run everybody run

sounds more like "the end is coming everybody run"

Angels coming everybody run everybody run You wanna live forever tonight gonna live forever Tonight Tonight Tonight angels coming everybody run everybody run You wanna live forever tonight gonna live forever Tonight

are the correct lyrics, see here: http://www.metrolyrics.com/stranger-in-a-strange-land-lyrics-30-seconds-to-mars.html

look on youtube, on the official 30STM channel and it says the lyrics are

the end is coming everybody run now we're gonna live forever gonna live forever tonight tonight, tonight

i could never hear 'angles coming' so i looked them up and there they are =]

yeah, this is all a bit old, check their youtube site, it has all the true lyrics: it is the end is coming, and 'one that was saved' is 'one and the same', also the chorus is 'angel or demon, i gave up my soul, im guilty of treason, ive abandond control', which overall makes more sense, if you listen closely a vaticans son doesnt fit, and right at the end its 'abondon control... YOUR SOUL' check it out man

The whole "everybody run" is quite reminiscent of "everybody run now" on the song Oblivion, dunno if that's like a reference or not though.

<3 Love it.

that's what I thought too!

I'm not sure if this is right, but when I was listening to the song this is what I heard:

Enemy of mine Fuck you like the devil violent inside beautiful and evil I'm a ghost you're an angel one in the same just remains of an age

I also think that this song has a lot of 'sexual' meaning behind it i.e. the first stanza. Because Jared said in an interview in a number of words, that this song talked about sexuality which he claimed 'needed to be adressed'. So this song could really mean alot of things.

This is what Jared said:

"That’s the left side of my brain, me in the darkest corner of my soul. It’s a pretty sexual song as well, which is an area I don’t normally delve into.

"When you want to tell a story, you want to explore all the avenues and angles. I felt I needed to reveal more of myself. It wasn’t hard, but it might be surprising for some people.

"It’s an electronic song, and we built all the sounds up from scratch; we didn’t use anything pre-programmed. I think it’s pretty unique."

That's what I thought when I heard the phrase "If you're looking for Jesus then get on your knees". But then I just thought I was being dirty-minded XP.

If any one of you readers were to research the occult/satanic ties with the entire entertainment industry, you wouldn't be surprised to find that most songs performed by mainstream artists are about the music industry. The term "I sold my soul to the devil," is something we all probably heard of at least once in our lifetime (especially if raised in a religious family). That term is very real in the entertainment business. Although it doesn't necessarily come in the form of satan or as an unusual spiritual vision, 'the devil' works through people.

There is a flaw in the lyrics above. He doesn't sing "It came for my soul" - What he really sings is, "I gave up my soul".

A lot of mainstream artists talk about selling their souls. This song is a perfect example. This song and also the song "Search and Destroy". After learning and researching a lot about symbolism in the entertainment business, I can't help but think that 30STM songs such as "A Beautiful Lie" and "The Kill" are also reference to the entertainment industry.

Now here's my interpretation for this song :

I think the writer is putting himself in the position of an extraterrestrial or a being with higher (and maybe darker) human intentions. Maybe it's just a human who has a higher rank genetically or spiritually. The first verse of the song is what gives me this idea. Because species tend to favor their own species against others. So if one is to fuck their enemy, they must have a different standard or rank compared to them. But after this verse the story to this song is just a message to anyone listening.

To me the message is a warning to us (the fans or listeners) that there is more to life then society's illusion. People live thinking that there is a God and a Satan while other people go around believing there is not. I think 30STM are pushing a certain religious agenda. I haven't done much research about it, but it is obviously there. Everyone needs to do their own research, and stop being misled by the people/ celebrities who inspire them. Because mainstream celebrities work as one-way messengers from the people behind the scenes to the mass. It's like a puppet show.

My Interpretation

^ YES. THIS. EXACTLY. i love you. i thought it was just me.

^ YES. THIS. EXACTLY. i love you. i thought it was just me.

oh and i also think the term "i'll fuck you" might be used more as an "i'll fuck you over" than literal sex, but who knows. much of this song (more than most) is pretty cryptic, i think for a reason. i think they are trying to open peoples eyes while at the same time trying to hide the fact that they're doing this by distorting lyrics and using code. but anyway, yes, i completely agree with you. best comment i've ever read on this site!...

Definitely one of the more interesting sets of lyrics off the new album.

They remind me of a lot of stuff on the first record.

I agree!

it looks like the 'armaggedon day' in the vision of a religious guy and he is praying to go away without suffering or just quietly watching everybody running away to protect themselfs, but he don't need to be protected so he is just watching all the chaos

Cover art for Stranger In a Strange Land lyrics by 30 Seconds to Mars

i'm pretty sure it's "I'm out of control" not "A vaticans son"

...maybe i'm not positive

but it would rhyme

... okay now i'm not sure

i hear "vatican's son" sometimes and "out of control" others

The guys just made an offical youtube channel and they put the lyrics up for that part as, "I've abandoned control." Just to clear that up hah
