Happy Birthday Guadalupe! Lyrics

(Ouch.)

Well I woke up Christmas morning,
and what did I see?
I saw a lovely señorita looking back at me
named Guadalupe, with big brown eyes,
boy, what did you this time?
Made my excuses and a b-line for the bedroom door,
she was beggin' and a-pleadin',
screamin', "Por favor, mi cumpleaños! Stay with me, baby it's cold outside."

We are livin' in a difficult time.
We've been walkin' down a difficult line.
Put your feet up baby it's Christmas time!
Cumpleaños feliz!
Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!

(Our time will come.)
(We both, hold on.)

She gave me coffee and tortillas to console my head,
prepared the slippers on my feet before she made our bed,
and blew the candles, from my favorite cake,
and we kissed beneath the mistletoe.
And I pulled her body close to mine,
I had just one chance, I whispered,
"Baby will you marry me for just one dance."
Infatuation. The things you say,
I got scared and I left that night.

'Cuz we are livin' in a difficult time.
And we've been walkin' down a difficult line.
But put your feet up baby it's Christmas time!
Cumpleaños feliz!
Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!

Deck the halls with rosaries.
Wish upon a Christmas tree.
Silent night please come to me,
bearing gifts from my... my Mexican angel!

At night I wake up cold and lonely,
burstin' at the seems,
she haunts the early morning hours
of December dreams,
my Guadalupe, with big brown eyes,
I wanna break this spell tonight.

'Cuz we are livin' in a difficult time.
And we've been walkin' down a difficult line.
But put your feet up baby it's Christmas time!
Cumpleaños feliz!
Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!

This is just fantastic. Their Christmas songs are so unlike the others. One of the many things I love about The Killers is that they are always so different than everyone else. This has been on repeat for a while now. :D It’s an upbeat song with haunting lyrics.

So I think this song is about someone who just goes out and sleeps with women for fun, and then one day he realizes that his could fall in love with one of them. When he starts to fall, he has to get out because he can’t deal with the commitment. So he runs away from it all, from the Woman he’s fallen for, and his happiness as well. Once he’s gone though, he can’t handle being away from her. She plagues his thoughts… she’s always on his mind.

I love love love The Killers, and I really like this song.

It came out on my birthday a few days ago so I kind of just pretended it was for me XD even though my name isn't Guadalupe, but...that's just a minor detail, really, LOl.

I think it's about someone that had a crazy night in Mexico (perhaps?) and woke up the next morning -Christmas morning- beside a girl he didn't know.

"Well I woke up Christmas morning, and what did I see? I saw a lovely señorita looking back at me named Guadalupe, with big brown eyes, boy, what did you this time?”

He tries to make a run for it, as he probably has before in similar situations, wanting to remain unattached and uninvolved, but apparently, it’s her birthday so she persuades him to stay.

The fact that her name is Guadalupe probably correlates with Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico’s Catholic representation of the Virgin Mary…who obviously played a key role in the creation of Christmas.

"Made my excuses and a b-line for the bedroom door, she was beggin' and a-pleadin', screamin', "Por favor, mi cumpleaños! Stay with me, baby it's cold outside."

The following stanza is just letting us know that, yes, times are tough, but it’s Christmas and we should just try to enjoy the good, despite all the bad.

“We are livin' in a difficult time. We've been walkin' down a difficult line. Put your feet up baby it's Christmas time! Cumpleaños feliz! Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!”

Here, he describes the brief time they spent together. It’s a sweet, melancholic little montage.

"She gave me coffee and tortillas to console my head, prepared the slippers on my feet before she made our bed, and blew the candles, from my favorite cake, and we kissed beneath the mistletoe."

This is my favorite part:

"And I pulled her body close to mine, I had just one chance, I whispered, "Baby will you marry me for just one dance." Infatuation. The things you say, I got scared and I left that night."

It’s clear that he got too close to feeling something more for this girl, and that scared him, so he left her in the middle of the night.

"'Cuz we are livin' in a difficult time. And we've been walkin' down a difficult line. But put your feet up baby it's Christmas time! Cumpleaños feliz! Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!"

This is just another little montage of iconic Christmas moments, with a Mexican twist.

"Deck the halls with rosaries. Wish upon a Christmas tree. Silent night please come to me, bearing gifts from my... my Mexican angel!"

He misses her; she haunts his dreams, and he wonders if he’ll ever see her again. When he says, “I wanna break this spell tonight,” it could either mean that he wants to stop thinking about her all together cuz he doesn’t even know where to find her or how to face her again, OR…he wants to find her, face her, and let her know how much he’s missed her.

"At night I wake up cold and lonely, burstin' at the seems, she haunts the early morning hours of December dreams, my Guadalupe, with big brown eyes, I wanna break this spell tonight.

'Cuz we are livin' in a difficult time. And we've been walkin' down a difficult line. But put your feet up baby it's Christmas time! Cumpleaños feliz! Happy Birthday, Guadalupe!"

Sorry it was so long, I took my time. Hope this helps :]

Believe me, i am right about this song. to begin, i believe guadalupe/his lover is the lord Jesus Christ. This is quite obvious because it's a christmas single, named Happy Birthday Guadalupe, and christmas is Jesus' birthday, hence Guadalupe is a symbol for Jesus.

Reason two: "She gave me coffee and tortillas to console my head." The coffee represents the blood of christ while the tortillas represent the body of Christ. Christ gave his body and blood to his disciples to "console" their heads on the news of his imminent death.

The recurring chorus further proves my thesis, they are saying to, even though the times are tough, much like the events that led to Jesus' crucifixion, but to have faith regardless.

Thank you for your time, believeme

My Interpretation

I can see how you might interpret it this way, and in fact I could make even a stronger argument that would compliment your thesis, but the only glaring problem I see is that Virgin de la Guadalupe is a representation of the Virgin Mary in Mexico and is very highly regarded there. Happy Birthday, Guadalupe just doesnt seem appropriate to say Happy Birthday to Christ.

I looooove the song! The Killers NEVER disappoint!

I think it's about someone that's maybe been sleeping around and not taking relationships seriously so he wakes up next to this girl and thinks she's pretty and everything and he realized he's done the same thing again "what did you do this time" so then he tries to leave but she begs him to stay so he does. And then while they're dancing and kissing under the miseltoe he realizes that he doesn't want to get involved so he gets scared and leaves. And then later on he regrets that decision because he keeps thinking about her and he wants to "break the spell" of never being able to stay in a relationship.

And then I think the chorus is just basically saying that there are so many bad things going on right now, and life is difficult but it's Christmas time so you should just relax and enjoy life and enjoy the good things. So maybe that's him trying to tell himself to stop living life the way he has been and enjoy life and let himself fall in love. I don't know!
